Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Therapeutic Recreation Specialist to join our team at ProMedica. As a key member of our psychiatric services team, you will be responsible for providing therapeutic activity services to patients seeking mental health and psychiatric treatment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess patient needs, skills, and interests and develop treatment goals.
  • Provide individualized and group programs to increase functional levels and promote a therapeutic milieu.
  • Conduct groups for patients, including weekdays, evenings, and weekends.
  • Assess daily patient functioning and document participation in activity therapy treatment.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings and document according to organizational standards.
Accountabilities
  • Assess patient functional and mental status, interests, and skill level through patient assessment interviews.
  • Interpret assessment information to develop patient goals and treatment interventions.
  • Notify activity therapy staff of changes or updated goals as per patient functioning.
  • Complete weekly activity therapy treatment notes and treatment plans according to organizational policy.
  • Develop, implement, and review activity programs to meet patient needs.
  • Acquire and demonstrate knowledge of patient diagnosis, complications, precautions, and indications for treatment.
  • Provide regular reports to team members and in team meetings on patient progress and participation in activity therapy treatment.
  • Assist in arranging program coverage and ensure covering staff is well-informed of treatment required for patients.
  • Communicate and coordinate activity programs with the psychiatric services team to promote patient participation and consistency in care.
  • Implement established infection control procedures when working with or around patients.
  • Assist in planning and implementing special events and activities.
  • Participate in quality improvement programs and maintain assigned activity storage areas in an organized manner.
  • Keep current on policies and procedures for safety, including fire drills, disaster evacuations, and infection control.
  • Maintain CPR and non-violent crisis intervention training according to organizational requirements.
  • Keep current on literature and new developments in the field of activity/recreational therapy and psychiatric populations.
  • Seek opportunities for self-improvement and professional growth.
  • Develop expertise in an area of interest and share with others to upgrade professional performance.
  • Understand the capabilities and limitations of assistants and utilize them effectively to meet patient and departmental goals.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Three to five years' experience in a comprehensive inpatient psychiatric unit or comparable work experience.
  • CPR-BLS certification.
  • Preferred qualifications include individual, family, and group therapy training and experience, as well as certification as a Certified Recreational Therapist Registered or Expressive Therapist.
Working Conditions

Demonstrates knowledge and use of standard precautions and PPE. Demonstrates knowledge and use of safe patient handling equipment.

Must be able to tolerate exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, temperature changes, and exposure to blood-borne pathogens and bodily fluids.

Must be able to move about the hospital and between workstations, and prolonged periods of standing.

Must be able to frequently move, lift, or carry light to heavy patients or equipment.

Must be able to lift medium materials, non-material handling; continuous standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching; frequent pushing, pulling, and squatting.

Must be able to appropriately provide care to patients with psychiatric diagnoses and behaviors in the clinical setting.
