Job Summary:

The Custodian Position at Chicago Heights Fire Department is responsible for maintaining an attractive, sanitary, and safe facility for students, staff, and the public. This includes providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities, and events, as well as minimizing property damage, loss, and liability exposure to the school district.

Responsibilities:
  1. Sweep, dust, and arrange furniture, empty trash and pencil sharpeners, clean chalkboards, and set up for activities.
  2. Wash walls, woodwork, and windows, and clean and polish metal surfaces.
  3. Clean and maintain hard and soft surface floors, wet mop, and spot clean.
  4. Clean, sanitize, and deodorize restrooms and locker rooms.
  5. Perform minor repair maintenance, operate heating, A/C, ventilation, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  6. Assist in the maintenance of lawns, landscaping, concrete, and blacktop surfaces and playgrounds, including pedestrian walkways, snow, and ice removal.
  7. Assist with set ups and tear downs for school activities.
  8. Operate security systems and secure building at the conclusion of shift.
  9. Work a revised schedule and substitutes for other custodial staff when necessary.
  10. Share responsibility for holiday, extended day, and weekend activities with other custodial staff.
  11. Attend in-service training for the purpose of receiving information on new and/or improved procedures.
  12. Deliver various items for the purpose of distributing materials to the appropriate parties.
  13. Help respond to immediate safety and/or operating concerns for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning physical and educational environment.
  14. Inspect school district facilities for the purpose of ensuring the site is suitable for safe operations and maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and identifying any repairs that may be necessary due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
  15. Perform work at heights of up to 12 feet using ladders and/or scaffolding for the purpose of cleaning, changing light bulbs, replacing ceiling tiles, etc.
  16. Lift up to 30 pounds unassisted for the purpose of lifting equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks.
  17. Prepare school district facilities for daily operations for the purpose of ensuring school district facilities are operational and safe.
  18. Secure school district facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss, and potential liability to the school district.
  19. Service job-related machinery/equipment for the purpose of maintaining equipment in good working condition.
  20. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors for the purpose of ensuring the efficient functioning of the work unit.

Requirements:
  • High School Diploma
  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • Good attendance
  • Ability to communicate and follow written and oral communication
  • Ability to demonstrate recognition of equipment malfunction
  • Demonstrate positive attitude towards people with whom one works, ability to work cooperatively and willingness to accept instruction and training

Working Conditions:
