About the Job


The City of New York's Department of Social Services is seeking a highly skilled Attorney II to join their Support and Lien Recovery Litigation Unit (SLRLU). As an Attorney II, you will provide legal assistance to various program areas within the department by researching complex legal questions, interpreting laws and regulations, and drafting legal documents. You will also represent the Commissioner in judicial proceedings, negotiate contracts and settlements, and conduct legal discovery to obtain evidence.

Key Responsibilities



  • Provide legal research and analysis to support litigation efforts
  • Draft pleadings, motions, agreements, and other legal documents
  • Represent the Commissioner in court proceedings, including trials and hearings
  • Negotiate contracts and settlements on behalf of the agency
  • Conduct legal discovery to obtain evidence and formulate legal strategies
  • May provide guidance and training to other attorney staff members and support staff

Requirements



  1. Admission to the New York State Bar
  2. One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar, or six months of service as an Agency Attorney Intern
  3. Must remain a Member of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of employment

Preferred Qualifications



  • Strong oral and written advocacy skills
  • Knowledge of proper courtroom etiquette, family law, estate law, and civil procedure
  • Ability to articulate the law and advocate on behalf of the agency
  • Superior legal research and writing ability, time management discipline, and prior experience as a supervisor or mentor

Benefits


The City of New York offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including a minimum estimated salary of $85,000 per year, based on the location in Jamaica, NY, and the requirements of the job. In addition, employees may be eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment assistance programs. Residency in New York City is not required for this position.
