GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the Assistant Park Superintendent and Lead Maintenance Specialist, this role involves executing advanced (journey-level) maintenance and construction tasks. Responsibilities encompass all aspects of upkeep and repair for facilities, structures, equipment, and landscapes within the jurisdiction of Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Duties may include, but are not limited to, cleaning and maintaining cabins, restrooms, and grounds.

This position supports other personnel in fulfilling park maintenance duties essential for meeting public expectations and the needs of all visitors. Adherence to procurement protocols for supplies, tools, and equipment is required. The role also includes participation as a wildland fire crew member in all aspects of prescribed fire execution and wildfire response on designated areas.

Work is conducted under general supervision, allowing for moderate independence in decision-making and initiative. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary. Compliance with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures is mandatory.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from High School or possession of a GED.

Experience: A minimum of three years in facility, equipment, or grounds maintenance.

Licensure: A valid State driver's license is required at the time of employment. Additionally, candidates must possess or be able to obtain a National Wildland Fire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Firefighter, Type II (FFT2) certification within one year of employment.

NOTE: Retention in this position is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining the required license or certification.

Physical Requirements: Candidates must successfully complete the Wildland Fire Work Capacity Test at the 'Moderate' physical fitness level (walk 2 miles with a 30 lb. pack in 30 minutes or less) within one year of employment.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:

Experience: Thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of the required experience, with a maximum substitution of two years.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: Three years of experience in electrical, carpentry, or plumbing repairs related to buildings, facilities, and grounds. Experience in public interaction is also preferred.

Licensure: Current NWCG Firefighter, Type II (FFT2) certification is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of general maintenance techniques for facilities, equipment, and grounds; understanding of custodial responsibilities; knowledge of revenue collection accountability; familiarity with basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, masonry, janitorial, and mechanical maintenance tasks.

Skills in using MS Word, Excel, and Outlook; effective verbal and written communication; providing quality customer service in a professional manner; establishing and maintaining productive relationships with colleagues and contacts; making independent, sound, and timely decisions; operating hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators, and other mechanical equipment.

Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team; effectively manage a fast-paced work environment; work independently with minimal supervision; maintain flexibility while managing frequent interruptions and shifting priorities; assist in interpreting and enforcing park regulations; perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.; and conduct work activities in alignment with TPWD safety protocols.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position requires working in a public park environment with overnight camping. Employees may be required to work hours outside the standard 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule, including weekends and holidays. Responding to emergencies and on-call situations is necessary. Work is performed outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions, and may involve manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs. Operating a State vehicle may be required, and travel of 10% with potential overnight stays is expected. Compliance with TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures is essential. A non-smoking environment is maintained in State buildings and vehicles.
