San Antonio, Texas, United States Southwest Research Institute Full time
About Us:

The Marine Structures & Engineering Section specializes in providing research and development engineering services for both commercial and governmental clients. Our focus is on the design, analysis, fabrication, and commissioning of various types of pressure vessels for applications that include land-based, subsea, manned, and unmanned systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct stress analysis on both existing and newly constructed items utilizing finite element analysis techniques, primarily employing ANSYS software across various methods including linear elastic, non-linear, and thermal analyses.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn and contribute to studies related to fatigue and fracture mechanics.
  • Present findings and provide input during customer-focused preliminary and critical design reviews.
  • Determine the types and scope of analyses required to fulfill project specifications as dictated by relevant design codes, clients, and project managers. Develop internal and/or external budgets and timelines for analysis tasks.
  • Offer design assistance using Creo (Pro-E) and/or SolidWorks, along with a solid understanding of welding techniques, joint geometries, pressure-related loadings, and the identification and mitigation of fatigue-critical areas.
  • Create clear and concise reports, presentations, and supporting documentation that summarize analysis findings and provide actionable recommendations.
Daily and Monthly Duties:
  • Analyze and interpret finite element analysis results to inform design decisions, ensure compliance with design standards, and evaluate component fitness for service.
  • Utilize engineering software to develop models for finite element analysis.
  • Investigate relevant codes, standards, customer specifications, and internal quality requirements to guarantee compliance.
  • Produce necessary documentation to support engineering efforts.
  • Collaborate with project managers and team members to identify, plan, and achieve project goals.
  • Regularly update stakeholders on the status, budget, and timeline of ongoing projects.
  • Implement quality program objectives, which may involve reviewing drawings, executing/revising engineering change orders, or other documentation review and retention processes.
  • Contribute to or create test plans to validate stress and strain analyses during physical testing, including identifying strain gauge locations and providing predictions and instructions to testing engineers.
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field with relevant experience.
  • 2 to 8 years of experience in the design of mechanical and/or pressure-related systems; familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 2 and 3.
  • 2 to 8 years of experience using finite element software, with advanced knowledge of load/constraint application and meshing techniques.
  • Proficiency in either Creo (Pro-E) and/or SolidWorks, with a willingness to learn if not already skilled. Familiarity with ANSYS or the ability to learn it is required. Experience with fatigue/fracture software such as NASGRO or other commercial fitness-for-service software is advantageous.
  • Knowledge or interest in Pressure Vessels for Human Occupancy (PVHO-1), ABS Rules for Building and Classing Underwater Vehicles, Systems, and Hyperbaric Facilities, and/or DNV-GL Rules for Classification of Ships, or equivalent naval specifications.
  • A valid driver's license is mandatory.
Special Requirements:

The selected applicant will undergo a government security investigation and must meet eligibility criteria for access to classified information. U.S. citizenship is required.
