ROLE SUMMARY:

The Chief Financial Officer will provide strategic financial leadership to MOCA, overseeing the Museum's operating budget, annual audit, and tax return. This role will also coordinate long-range and annual planning with the Director and Board of Trustees. The CFO will act as a representative and advocate for the Museum with government agencies, insurance companies, and local business groups.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide high-level oversight of all financial functions, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Lead the creation and management of the Museum's annual budget, ensuring accuracy and compliance with financial regulations.
  • Develop and implement financial strategies to support the Museum's goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with the Director's Office to provide leadership and strategic direction on internal organizational matters.
  • Oversee administrative operations, developing and implementing strategies and policies that support the Museum's goals.
  • Develop and maintain policies for museum fiscal activity, including travel, reimbursement, and approval levels.
  • Lead, coach, and mentor the finance department staff to ensure a professional approach to financial management.
  • Administer the organization's annual Audit and tax returns, as well as the 401(k) Audit and tax return.
  • Liaise with the Finance-Investments Board Committee regarding the Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO) relationship.
  • Support the Director and COO in the management of the Museum's facilities, including strategic planning, long-term capital budgeting, and debt analysis.
  • Supervise the Finance team's work related to risk management, payroll, and financial closing processes.
  • Act as the main liaison with banks and financial institutions for planning and management.
  • Support the CPCO with the annual performance evaluation process and associated changes in status and pay rates.
  • Work in partnership with all Departments to build professional relationships.
  • Support the financial performance of Retail Operations.
  • Provide leadership for the finance section of the Museum's accreditation process.
  • Contribute meaningfully to the strategic planning process, enactment, monitoring, and management of the Museum.
  • Attend meetings of the Board of Trustees, Executive Committee, and various Board Committees as required, providing statistical and financial reporting, as well as strategic recommendations.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • An undergraduate degree is required; an MBA degree and/or CPA certification is preferred.
  • A minimum of ten years of broad-based finance experience as a Chief Financial Officer (or a closely related role), preferably at a nonprofit arts institution.
  • Experience in a collection-based museum would be preferred. Demonstrated financial, administrative, and operational leadership at the CFO level is expected.
  • Ideally, candidates will have an understanding of nonprofit and museum regulations and standards as it pertains to staff, art objects, and standards and practices (i.e., GAAP, Tax, AAM, and AAMD).
  • Candidates should have the ability to understand and resolve complex issues, problems, and disputes of a collecting art museum and 501(c)(3) organization.
  • Comfortable with a varied workday. Team player and a fast learner.
  • The successful candidate will have excellent leadership, entrepreneurial decision-making, and management skills.
  • This individual will have extensive experience with budget and financial analysis, as well as knowledge of GAAP and fund accounting.
  • Expertise in organizational management and planning, and supervision of staff at varying levels of experience and skills is expected.
  • This individual will bring the ability to initiate and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse staff, Board of Trustees, and a variety of individuals from public and private organizations.

COMPENSATION:

Salary range: 225,000 - 235,000
