The City of Pittsburgh seeks a highly skilled Communications Director to establish, manage, and implement effective communication and public engagement strategies citywide. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing and managing the city's communications policies and procedures, overseeing communications citywide, and facilitating strategic approaches to emerging issues.

As a key member of the Mayor's Office, the Communications Director will serve as an internal consultant, advising on communication strategies and implementation methods based on internal and external communication policies, needs, and best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop crisis communications strategies and responses as needed
  • Manage national media opportunities for the Mayor and executive staff
  • Serve as liaison with intergovernmental and other partner communications teams to coordinate messaging on shared priorities
  • Work with Press Secretary to organize Mayoral press conferences, local and national interviews, and announcements
  • Identify and leverage international and national opportunities/initiatives to advance the Mayor's agenda and profile
  • Oversee and assist with development of speeches, talking points, and briefings for the Mayor and executive staff
  • Oversee development of City social media policies and strategies
  • Lead a team of communications professionals
  • Work with Director of Innovation and Performance to direct the work product of the Communications Services teams to ensure it is coordinated and aligned
  • Establish and drive a multi-channel communications strategy
  • Prepare and manage all communications material
  • Develop brand voice and maintain brand integrity across all platforms
  • Manage media relations and develop contacts with media members, influencers, and community leaders
  • Strategize, design, and lead creation of digital, video, audio, and print content with the appropriate team members
  • Track engagement across various platforms and make data-driven decisions
