Perinatal Nurse Specialist

The Perinatal Nurse Specialist will provide high-quality patient care in the Labor and Delivery Department. This role requires a competent nurse who can practice independently and demonstrate awareness of all relevant aspects of a situation. The ideal candidate will have the ability to provide routine and complex care, with a focus on long-range goals or plans. They will also be able to develop the ability to cope with and manage contingencies of clinical nursing, making appropriate assignments and delegating to other care providers as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Meet the expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
- Provide nursing care utilizing the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation for assigned patients.
- Address the increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families in accordance with their level of practice.
- Administer medications and treatments, monitor for side effects, and ensure the effectiveness of prescribed treatments.
- Document patient history, symptoms, medication, and care given.
- Assess learning needs and provide education to patients, family members, and/or caregivers, identifying issues and resources.

- Implement patient care and therapeutic procedures, monitor, and document progression of treatment and teaching goals.
- Evaluate the care and treatment provided to patients and the patient response to the care and treatment.
- Perform timely reassessment and documentation.
- Must be able to perform unit-specific competencies based on the specific patient care need for the designated unit's patient population.
Standard II. Patient Throughput & Patient Flow Process:
- Anticipate and plan for admission/discharge/transfer needs to facilitate patient flow.
- Utilize appropriate systems of communication and tools to facilitate the discharge process.
- Coach on tools and techniques for checking, cross-checking, and validating orders to ensure accuracy.
Standard III. Unit Operations:
- Plan, direct, and evaluate the overall nursing care and functions in a particular nursing unit during an assigned shift.
- Demonstrate good stewardship in proper use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
- Assess departmental staffing needs; actively participate in resourcing efforts.
- Educate and train others on the operations, ethics, and regulations within the industry.
Standard IV. Safe Practice/Quality Care/Regulations:
- Incorporate patient safety practices/guidelines to promote a safe environment resulting in positive patient outcomes.
- Demonstrate accountability for nursing research and quality improvement activities.
- Provide evidence-based nursing care.
- Communicate patient information effectively across the continuum of care.
- Educate and train others on the operations, ethics, and regulations within the industry.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local healthcare-related laws and regulations; ability to comply with these in healthcare practices and activities.
Technical Competencies:
Clinical Policies and Standards:
- Follow a specific set of standards and associated clinical procedures.
- Analyze policy and standards documentation and ensure organizational compliance.
- Provide feedback for improvement of procedures.
- Assist in the development and implementation of specific procedures.
- Work with control and monitoring mechanisms, tools, and techniques.
Health Information Documentation:
- Share experiences with maintaining paper and electronic patient documentation.
- Walk through the steps and procedures for receiving, validating, and updating patient records.
- Describe the flow of information between various stations or units.
- Discuss the functions, features, and document flow of electronic documentation.
- Transcribe verbal orders; explain techniques for ensuring their accuracy.
- Explain health information documentation best practices and their rationale across healthcare practices.
Medical Equipment:
- Describe experience with basic medical equipment used in the own unit or facility.
- Use standard diagnostic tools and techniques to resolve common equipment problems.
- Educate patients about the appropriate use of home medical equipment.
- Ensure that all equipment and related supplies are in proper working order prior to use to ensure patient safety.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, and evaluate incoming equipment.
Medical Order Processing:
- Share experiences with processing medical orders for one or more groups of patients or conditions.
- Describe functions and features of the system used to enter, validate, update, and forward medical orders.
- Discuss common errors, their sources, and procedures for correcting.
- Explain considerations for entering and following standing orders.
- Differentiate between standing orders and preprinted orders and considerations for each.
Patient Chart Reading and Interpretation:
- Describe experiences in reading and interpreting patient charts for patients on the unit and under own care.
- Review patients' charts for completion and accuracy; identify and alert to mistakes or omissions.
- Recognize unexpected readings and alert nursing or medical staff.
- Relate examples of mis-readings or misinterpretations and lessons learned.
- Review, discuss, and validate own interpretation with others.
Patient Safety:
- Share experiences with ensuring safety for one or more patient groups or settings.
- Explain key features of safety guidelines and procedures for those groups and settings.
- Listen and respond to safety inquiries from patients and family members.
- Recognize and address physiological and psychological signs of problems.
- Describe considerations for patients who can cause harm to self, versus harm to others.
- Utilize appropriate systems to document misses and near misses, participate in immediate investigating, analysis, and reporting in real-time.
Requirements:
Experience:
1 year of experience in the related nursing specialty preferred. Perinatal RN Residency, or recently practicing in a Perinatal Setting is preferred.
Education:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, preferred. All newly hired experienced RNs must attend New Nurses Orientation within the first 30 days of hire. New hires are precepted by a designated trained staff member and initial on-boarding requirements are validated through successful completion of the designated organizational entry competency validation and a Perinatal Department-specific competency validation. Completion of all annual competency verification requirements.
Licenses/Certifications/Registrations:
RN License in state of employment or compact. BLS required. Current certification from NCC Electronic Fetal Monitoring (C-EFM) or one of the following AWHONN courses: Intermediate FHM, Intermediate FHM Instructor, Advanced FHM Instructor, or Instructor Trainer at time of hire or prior to the end of orientation for experienced nurses; within 90 days of hire for new graduates and experienced nurses new to the specialty then required to maintain course certification thereafter. Current ACLS certification within 30 days of hire for experienced nurses; within 90 days of hire for new graduates then required to maintain certification thereafter. Current NRP certification at time of hire for experienced nurses; within 60 days for new graduates and experienced nurses new to the specialty then required to maintain certification thereafter.
