Director, Mental Health Detention Services

Mental Health Cooperative is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to fill the role of Director, Mental Health Detention Services. This position is responsible for managing, developing, and directing mental health services in the Davidson County Detention Services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage clinical and administrative functions of Detention Services in Davidson County Sheriff's Office Facilities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders of the Criminal Justice System, contract Medical Services provider, DCSO, Metro Health Department, and local specialty courts such as Mental Health Court.
  • Oversee the hiring and personnel needs per contract requirements.
  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures as they pertain to the responsibility of MHC according to the contract with the Medical Services provider.
  • Demonstrate a working understanding of the relevant National Commission on Correctional Health Care and American Correctional Associations (NCCHC/ACA) standards for mental health care.
  • Facilitate daily monitoring of the quality of services and direct performance adjustments as needed.
  • Utilize staff resources effectively to cover all required departmental needs. Demonstrates willingness to request guidance from supervisor and Chief Medical Officer when necessary and accept feedback readily.
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality and appropriateness of psychiatric care provided with the multi-disciplinary treatment team.
  • Provide professional assistance to the Medical Services provider and DCSO key personnel as needed.
  • Orchestrate psychiatric in-service education for the Medical Services provider.
  • Assist with development and uphold treatment protocols, formularies and policies that support current industry standards (ACA and NCCHC) for professional and ethical care, including documentation of such care.
  • Periodic assessment of consumers who are seriously and persistently mentally ill in the criminal justice for placement/treatment in the least restrictive treatment alternative. Assessments may include writing initial Certificate of Need for consumers in DCSO custody.
  • Identify service providers and develop positive working relationships with various organizations, institutions and agencies serving or having contact with incarcerated seriously and persistently mentally ill consumers.
  • Monitor productivity of team on weekly basis to ensure prompt service delivery.
  • Attend Medical Activity Meeting (MAC meeting) conducted by the Medical Services provider and be prepared to address concerns related to mental health services at the DCSO facilities.
  • Ensure there is a member of the team represented at the Medical Services provider Care Meetings and DCSO mental health special needs meetings.
  • Lead bi-weekly multi-disciplinary team meetings.
  • Prepare and submit statistical information required by contract to the Health Services Manager for the Medical Services provider by the 5th of each month.
  • Conduct quarterly improvement activities and submit QI reports by designated deadlines.
  • Ensure program is meeting all contractual requirements.
  • Participate in on-call activities as deemed necessary to the functions of the Department.
Requirements:
  • Master's degree (M.A., M.S.) in clinical social work, psychology, or counseling.
  • Must have a valid license as an LCSW, LPC or related field with 5 years post-licensed experience.
  • Prior supervisor experience is required.
  • Must have a Mandatory Prescreening Agent (MPA) designation or be eligible to obtain.
  • Must maintain CPR certification and any other certifications (such as First Aid) required by contract.
  • Valid Tennessee Driver's License
  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)
  • Acceptable Criminal Background Investigation
