Job Overview

Position: Controls Engineer II

Role Summary:

The selected candidate will engage in the design and enhancement of innovative control systems for solar tracking solutions, while also addressing and improving the functionality of current control systems.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate within a team to innovate new control system solutions for solar trackers. This includes tasks such as creating real-time operating system software for microcontrollers using C/C++, developing Linux-based applications in Python, designing custom electronic components, testing various functional and safety elements (including controllers, motor drivers, wireless communication devices, circuit breakers, and emergency switches), and ensuring seamless integration of these components into a cohesive system.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and enhancing the existing control system products. This involves developing and debugging PLC software, evaluating alternative functional and safety components, and optimizing layouts for cost efficiency and improved user experience.
  • Adhere to Array's internal protocols for product development and ongoing enhancements.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders, particularly in Product and Program Management, as required.
  • Work alongside external partners such as electronics design firms, contract software developers, testing laboratories, and certification bodies as needed.
  • Participate in field evaluations and testing to validate new products or diagnose issues with current offerings.
  • Regularly communicate work progress to the hiring manager.
  • Be prepared to travel and work in various environments as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of relevant industry experience
    OR
    Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Proven experience in software development for embedded systems (microcontrollers such as STM32 and ATMEL).
  • Ability to produce clear and well-structured code in C/C++.
  • Strong understanding of microcontroller architectures and their peripherals (e.g., ADC, PWM, I2C).
  • Interest or experience in machine-to-machine communication.
  • Experience or interest in data analysis, with familiarity in relational databases (MySQL) and Python libraries such as numpy, pandas, and matplotlib being advantageous.
  • Desire to learn and continuously enhance technical skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • The candidate will undergo a comprehensive technical interview process, which includes presenting an engineering portfolio and completing a C/C++ coding assessment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in the solar energy sector.
  • Experience with solar SCADA systems.
  • Familiarity with FreeRTOS or other real-time operating systems.
  • Knowledge of ladder logic programming to assist in PLC code development.
  • Experience or understanding of communication protocols such as Modbus (over RS-485 or TCP), OPC-UA, Zigbee, and RESTful API.
  • Experience or interest in custom electronics development.
  • Background in commercial or industrial product development.
  • Experience or interest in software development within a Linux environment.
  • Proficiency in Python.
