At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) position is a licensed nursing professional, experienced in clinical practice, operating at the Competent to Proficient level according to Benner's model.

The RN role delivers professional nursing care to a diverse patient demographic, performing nursing assessments, assisting with examinations and treatments, providing patient education, and maintaining medical documentation.

This position effectively and efficiently provides direct patient care, addressing varied and complex patient needs.

The RN collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team to ensure compassionate, efficient, and high-quality care, aiming for optimal treatment outcomes.

The RN demonstrates clinical proficiency in delivering care, utilizing technology, administering medications, executing procedures, and managing emergencies, while advocating for patient and family rights.

This role may involve leadership responsibilities, including participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor for students or new staff, and contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in collaboration with management.


Essential Functions - People:

Utilizes therapeutic communication, including active listening and education, to build relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team to collaborate on care plans.

Promotes teamwork by being aware of overall unit acuity, consistently offering assistance, and responding positively to requests for help. Fosters healthy relationships within the work environment.

Seeks and provides guidance to the interprofessional healthcare team when necessary, applying feedback to enhance patient outcomes.

Implements staff education tailored to patient populations and unit processes; mentors and coaches other staff and students, potentially including preceptorship. Engages in peer accountability to improve departmental metrics for turnover, retention, and employee engagement.

Essential Functions - Service:
Adheres to patient and family-centered care standards as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Conducts nursing assessments, assists with examinations and treatments, and maintains medical records. Practices in alignment with principles of cultural diversity and inclusion.

Develops, updates, and communicates care plans, including discharge planning, in partnership with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team, utilizing the nursing process.

Prioritizes care based on patients' needs, abilities, and preferences. Advocates for patients and families to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns, utilizing appropriate resources.
Provides patient education tailored to learning needs, using suitable resources, and plans for post-discharge care. Regularly evaluates patients' understanding and adjusts teaching methods as necessary.
Contributes to improving departmental patient satisfaction scores through peer accountability to service standards.

Essential Functions - Quality/Safety:

Adheres to care standards related to the nursing process as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.

Complies with regulatory requirements and professional practice standards as specified in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.

Identifies opportunities for practice improvement based on research evidence to achieve core measures and patient safety outcomes, supported by accurate documentation.

Provides and adjusts care for complex patients, coordinating with the interprofessional team based on evaluations of patients' conditions, supported by precise documentation.

Utilizes clinical judgment and an evidence-based analytical approach.

Enhances quality and safety scores on the unit-based scorecard through peer accountability, reporting near misses, and collaborating with the interprofessional healthcare team.


Essential Functions - Finance:
Demonstrates self-motivation to manage time effectively, document care promptly, minimize incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks. Provides input on unit resource utilization, including capital and operational budget needs.

Contributes to meeting departmental financial targets on the unit-based scorecard by decreasing length of stay, optimizing efficiency, and addressing other departmental specifications.

Essential Functions - Growth/Innovation:
Identifies and presents opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and improvement in patient care or unit operations using evidence-based practice literature. Proposes innovative solutions through evidence-based practice/performance improvement projects and shared governance activities.
Champions new care pathways or service line implementations to enhance community service. Identifies trends for improvement opportunities or practice changes and supports initiatives. Researches changes and presents options to shared governance and leadership.

Education:
Bachelor of Science degree or higher from an accredited School of Nursing.

Work Experience:
Two years of registered nursing experience in a healthcare setting.

Licenses and Certifications - Required:
RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure within 60 days.

OR
RN-Temp - Registered Nurse - Temporary State Licensure within 60 days.

AND
BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA)

AND
Other credentials and certifications as defined by unit/service line.

Licenses and Certifications - Preferred:
Magnet - ANCC Recognized Certification in applicable specialty area.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills assessments and performance evaluations as defined in orientation and annual departmental competency checklists.
Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform essential job functions, particularly regarding activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and colleagues in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.
Strong assessment, organizational, and problem-solving skills as evidenced by the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and role components.
Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care teams, and patients and their families.
Utilizes critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
Demonstrates proficient time management skills.
Maintains professional contributions as defined in the Clinical Career Path program guide.
Working knowledge of Microsoft products including Outlook.
