Job Summary:

UPMC East is seeking a Full-time Specimen Processor to work a daylight shift in the Lab Testing department. This role involves receiving, sorting, identifying, processing, and distributing specimens to all technical sections. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, a service-oriented approach, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Specimen Processing: Receive, sort, and prioritize specimens according to laboratory policies. Verify patient specimens with requisitions or labels, and ensure accurate information is entered into the laboratory information system.
  • Communication: Answer telephone inquiries, provide result and normal range information, and communicate effectively with all age groups and populations.
  • Quality Control: Investigate and resolve specimen problems, complete quality forms, and request assistance when needed.
  • Teamwork: Demonstrate a service-oriented approach, show initiative, and offer assistance in completing departmental work. Monitor pneumatic tube and courier deliveries to ensure timely processing of specimens.
  • Training and Development: Participate in the orientation and training of new laboratory specimen processors.

Requirements:

  • Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Experience: Three to six months of experience in a clinical laboratory, physician's office, or other medical environment, including knowledge of or experience in Medical Terminology and Laboratory Information systems.
  • Skills: Good oral and written communication skills, ability to communicate effectively with all age groups and populations.
