Job Description

At General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, we are seeking a highly skilled Principal Automation Systems Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing robotic platforms from prototype through product commercialization.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in automation engineering and experience with robotic platforms, as well as excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop automated systems for use in diverse manufacturing and production environments.
  • Design control systems and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to automate specific tasks.
  • Write and debug software programs for automated machinery and systems.
  • Develop Human Machine Interface (HMI) screens and dashboards for monitoring and controlling processes.
  • Program robotics and other automation hardware.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues with automated systems.
  • Oversee the installation of automation systems and machinery.
  • Ensure that automated systems are integrated effectively with existing processes.
  • Provide technical support during the installation and startup phases.
  • Monitor and maintain automated systems to ensure they function properly over time.
  • Implement upgrades and improvements to enhance performance and efficiency.
  • Conduct regular inspections and preventative maintenance.
  • Prepare detailed technical documentation, including design specifications, user manuals, and maintenance procedures.
  • Train operators and other staff on the proper use and maintenance of automated systems.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, software developers, and production managers.
  • Communicate effectively with clients to understand their needs and provide tailored automation solutions.
  • Ensure all automated systems comply with industry standards and safety protocols.

Requirements:

  • 10-12 years of experience in automation engineering or a related field.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley), HMI development, robotics, CAD software, and simulation tools.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, excellent communication abilities, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Travel Requirements:

Likely less than 25% travel required.
