Position Summary
Oversee and direct strategic advocacy initiatives at the state and local levels for the non-profit organization and its stakeholders. Recognize critical legislative priorities and formulate comprehensive government relations strategies to promote the interests of the sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify significant legislative priorities and lead multi-state advocacy campaigns to further the organization’s governmental relations objectives.
- Act as the organization’s representative in engagements with state and local officials, including both in-person and virtual legislative sessions, providing testimony before relevant committees, and conducting outreach to key stakeholders.
- Establish and nurture partnerships with allied organizations to create robust coalitions in support of legislative objectives.
- Maintain ongoing communication with executive members regarding state legislative issues and work collaboratively to build consensus within the State Steering Committee.
- Supervise the preparation of reports and updates concerning state legislative developments.
- Evaluate proposed legislation and collaborate with member organizations to formulate positions on critical issues.
- Manage and guide in-state contract consultants to implement government relations strategies across multiple key states.
- Review legislative committee agendas, minutes, and related documentation.
- Coordinate with internal teams to ensure a cohesive and interdisciplinary approach.
- Develop outreach strategies for the state political action committee.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required.
Qualifications for Success
- Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 10 years of experience in state lobbying within a non-profit or trade association context (experience in consumer products is advantageous).
- Exceptional public speaking abilities to effectively address both large and small audiences.
- Strong writing skills for drafting testimony and communicating with stakeholders.
- Proven track record in managing advocacy initiatives and state-level corporate political contributions.
- In-depth understanding of the state and local governmental decision-making processes.
- Self-motivated individual with a strong attention to detail.
- Experience collaborating with inter-governmental organizations and overseeing consultants in various locations.
- Demonstrated sound judgment, confidentiality, strategic analytical capabilities, innovative thinking, and a commitment to ethical practices.
- Proficient in advanced MS Office applications.
- Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time, occasionally on short notice.
This position offers a hybrid work arrangement. Candidates are expected to have the flexibility to work in the office as required.
