Role Purpose:

The Surgical Technologist operates under the guidance of the physician, CVOR Coordinator, and CVOR First Assistant. Responsibilities include preparing all necessary instruments and supplies for surgical procedures, retracting tissues, and passing instruments to the surgical team as required. Maintaining the sterile field is crucial to ensure the integrity of the surgical environment. Adherence to the KHI Behavioral Expectations Agreement is mandatory, encompassing standards for Courtesy, Respect, Privacy, Communication, Responsiveness, Teamwork, Professionalism, and Safety. The Surgical Technologist is expected to exemplify these standards to fellow staff members.

Key Responsibilities

Procedure Assessment:

- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of various surgical procedures by referring to preference cards.

- Takes initiative to prepare for upcoming surgical cases.

- Identifies anatomical structures and functions, recognizing common medical conditions.

Preparation for Procedures:

- Effectively communicates with team members and surgeons to ensure accurate preparation for each surgical case according to individual physician preferences.

- Develops a comprehensive plan for the necessary instruments and equipment.

Implementation of Procedures:

- Provides care in accordance with established AST Standards and KHI Policies through clear communication and ethical practices.

- Acts as an advocate for patients, ensuring confidentiality is maintained.

- Delivers care and communicates in a non-judgmental and inclusive manner.

- Recognizes personal accountability for actions taken.

- Demonstrates effective communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, to provide emotional support to patients and their families.

- Engages in positive team-building activities and interactions.

- Shows initiative and efficiency in time management, completing additional responsibilities as needed.

Quality of Care:

- Identifies emergency situations and employs sound judgment to implement established procedures calmly and effectively.

- Applies aseptic principles knowledgeably to ensure optimal patient care.

- Pursues knowledge of new surgical techniques and relevant topics related to the Operating Room and surgical patients.

- Anticipates the surgeon's needs to facilitate procedures, minimizing patient trauma.

- Differentiates sterilization methods for specialized equipment and instruments required for specific surgeries.

- Exhibits dexterity in handling surgical instruments and possesses a thorough understanding of the procedural steps for various surgeries.

- Understands the effects and applications of anesthetic agents to provide informed patient care.

- Identifies anatomical structures and functions, recognizing common medical conditions.

Education and Qualifications:

- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or equivalent training.

- Holds current BLS certification through the American Heart Association.

- Certified Surgical Technologist credential is required.

Special Position Requirements:

- Exposure Category: Category I, with routine potential for exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.

- Subject to risks of burns and cuts.

Work Requirements:

- Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.

- Ability to lift 50 to 75 pounds, with a combined lifting capacity of 150 pounds.

- Capable of caring for patients with infectious diseases.

- Must be able to stand for extended periods.
