Physical Therapist

The Physical Therapist will practice physical therapy, evaluating, treating, and preventing disability, injury, disease, or other conditions of health, using physical, chemical, and/or mechanical means. This includes heat, cold, light, air, water, sound, electricity, massage, mobilization, and therapeutic exercise, with and without assistive devices. The Physical Therapist will perform and interpret tests and measurements to assess pathophysiological, pathomechanical, and developmental deficits of human systems to determine treatment and assist in diagnosis and prognosis.
Key Responsibilities:- Understand and adhere to the Hospital's Performance Standards, Policies, and Behaviors.
- Perform physical therapy evaluations and treatment procedures upon physician's referral.
- Develop plans of treatment, modify treatment plans/programs as necessary, determine rehabilitation potential, and participate in discharge planning.
- Carry out regular assessment/re-evaluations and modify program goals as needed.
- Be open to treating infants, children, and adolescents as requested within professional ability level.
- Under the orders of a qualified ordering provider, administer oxygen to the patient during treatment sessions. In certain situations, titrate the oxygen flow to maintain patients at or above the threshold saturation value when prescribed by a provider in maintenance of a specific oxygen saturation (SpO2) level during rest and activity.
- Note possible need for patients to receive other services (OT, ST, SS, etc.). Discuss possibilities with other professionals, physicians.
- Know and utilize varied treatment techniques and skills for various problems/disabilities.
- Keep up-to-date records of each patient's treatment and progress, performing timely re-evaluation as necessary and indicated.
- Be responsible for scheduling of patients' sessions and arrange for transfer of duties in the event of absence.
- Instruct patients in the use and care of equipment and apparatus, such as wheelchair, braces, canes, crutches, walkers, prosthetic, and orthotics services.
- Direct and supervise the activities of Physical Medicine Technicians, students, and volunteers.
- Maintain department equipment; report defects or problems immediately to supervisor staff.
- Consult with other health-related departments (i.e., nursing, occupational therapy, speech therapy, etc.) to coordinate therapeutic programs and maintain communication with physicians regarding the patient's progress and response to treatment.
- Demonstrate and teach physical therapy techniques to physical therapy students.
- Participate in periodic assessment of the quality of care provided; make suggestions for improvement of quality as needed.
- Attend department meetings, allied health conferences. Attend special courses, seminars, in-service. Report on relevant course material to staff. Share areas of special interest or expertise with staff.
- Accept rotations in assignments to bedside care and out-patient clinic.
- Instruct families about the needs, management, capabilities, and precautions related to the patient's care prior to discharge.
- Provide information regarding billing for services and equipment.
- Determine needs for purchase of equipment for patients and department.
- Maintain and carry out procedures for departmental records, charge slips, daily statistics, etc.
- Attend hospital mandatory in-service programs.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
- Graduate of an accredited college program in Physical Therapy. B.A./B.S. in Physical Therapy or higher degree.
- New York State license or eligibility for license.
- BLS (through the American Heart Association) is required within 6 months of hire.
- Successful completion of orientation program according to department guidelines.

- May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital's SDS (Safety Data Sheet) database and may be accessed through the hospital's Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS database can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
