Seattle, Washington, United States Relativity Full time

Company Overview:

At Relativity Space, we are driven by two ambitious objectives: to establish a premier commercial launch enterprise with Terran R and to lead the way in additive manufacturing advancements. These initiatives are integral to our long-term vision of building humanity's industrial foundation on Mars, enabling the expansion of interplanetary life and enriching the human experience. Our journey commences on Earth, where we engineer, construct, and launch rockets to transport customer payloads into orbit. Terran R, our medium-to-heavy lift reusable rocket, addresses the increasing demand for launch capabilities through our iterative design approach that accelerates development while reducing costs. Our pioneering research in 3D printing is pushing the limits of large-scale additive manufacturing.

Your experience with us transcends a mere job; it is a chance to influence the future of aerospace technology, additive manufacturing, and the human experience, alongside a community of dedicated and innovative individuals. Embark on this remarkable journey with us as we collaborate to turn our vision into reality.

About the Team:

The Structures team at Relativity is tasked with the design, analysis, testing, and production of our launch vehicle integrated structures and flight mechanisms. As a member of this team, you will take ownership of hardware throughout the entire product lifecycle, with the opportunity to validate your designs through testing at our state-of-the-art facility. Unique to Relativity, you will collaborate across various teams to utilize our groundbreaking 3D printing technology to create world-class integrated launch vehicles. This team plays a vital role in the successful launch of Terran 1 & Terran R, among many other pioneering projects.

About the Role:

Your responsibilities will encompass a comprehensive design cycle, including conceptualization, design, analysis, manufacturing, and testing of primary and secondary structures such as Thrust Structures, Propellant Tanks, Interstage, or Fairing. You will be expected to think innovatively and leverage creativity to minimize mass, components, processes, and tooling requirements.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Innovative conceptualization of structural load paths and design for complex structures and adjacent system integration.
  • Reviewing static and dynamic load inputs, material properties, and structural systems requirements.
  • Conducting analysis and sizing of flight structures to ensure timely design reviews and drawing releases.
  • Developing and supporting hardware testing campaigns, including test integration, operation, and evaluation of results.
  • Assisting in the development of manufacturing processes.

To excel in this role, you should be self-driven, adaptable, and capable of leading your projects to completion in a dynamic environment. Ideally, you possess substantial mechanical or structural design experience and a proven history of successfully completing collaborative projects.

On a weekly basis, you will design flight components for our upcoming Terran R vehicle using industry-standard software, perform analyses using advanced tools, create and release technical drawings, and support the fabrication of your components. You will take full ownership of your designs from requirements through to production, employing your strong organizational skills to document your work effectively and present your recommendations when necessary.

About You:

  • 8+ years of experience in a design engineering capacity.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Extensive experience with industry-standard CAD software.
  • Working knowledge of structural analysis methods and testing.
  • Fundamental understanding of structural integrity, stability, and fatigue failure mechanisms.
  • Basic knowledge of both additive and traditional manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with full lifecycle project ownership.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of mechanical or structural design and analysis experience.
  • Extensive familiarity with specific CAD software.
  • Expertise in structural analysis tools.
  • Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and technical drafting.

Relativity Space offers competitive compensation, equity options, a generous vacation policy, an annual learning and development stipend, and more.
