Responsible for designing and executing age-appropriate learning activities that cater to the holistic development of children. Promotes readiness through a variety of social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and linguistic experiences. Ensures a secure and healthy learning atmosphere while actively engaging families and enhancing community relationships.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Understand and adhere to the philosophies and regulations of SMOC Child Care and Head Start, including EEC, Head Start, NAEYC, and QRIS standards relevant to the classroom.
- Facilitate and manage the classroom, creating an effective learning environment that supports and challenges each child's growth.
- Ensure compliance within the classroom and foster a positive atmosphere for the team.
- Engage in professional development opportunities for staff enhancement.
- Maintain open communication with colleagues and supervisors, sharing relevant information promptly.
- Observe and document children's behaviors to assess skills and tailor plans to meet individual and group needs, addressing any concerns through appropriate interventions.
- Evaluate classroom requirements for resources and communicate needs to the lead teacher or supervisor.
- Keep the classroom environment, equipment, and materials safe, clean, and organized.
- Provide accurate and timely documentation and record-keeping as required.
- Adhere strictly to health and safety protocols.
- Participate in all mandatory meetings, training sessions, and parent engagement activities.
- Complete Mandated Reporter (51A) training as required.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with families through various forms of communication, including phone calls and conferences.
- Supervise children actively at all times.
- Understand and address the needs of all clients, both within and outside the scope of work.
- Attend engagement team meetings as requested and communicate effectively with families and staff across different areas.
- Maintain confidentiality of client, employee, and agency information in compliance with legal requirements.
- Ensure adherence to program, agency, and funder standards, as well as SMOC policies and procedures.
- Be adaptable to changes in classroom assignments to meet the needs of children and families.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Required: EEC PS Teacher certificate.
- Strong communication skills.
- Preferred: Degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and communicate well with children, families, and colleagues.
- Bi-lingual abilities are advantageous.
- Preference will be given to individuals with prior experience as Head Start parents.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
- Reports directly to the Center Director.
- Indirectly reports to the Division Director.
- Supervises Teacher Aides.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must be capable of handling the physical requirements of the role, including lifting children and responding swiftly in emergencies.
- Must have a recent physical examination confirming good health and compliance with EEC standards.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position involves direct or incidental contact with clients served by SMOC in various programs funded or administered through the Executive Office of Health and Human Services. A successful background check is a prerequisite.
