Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Horticulturist for Botanical Gardens plays a crucial role in the hands-on upkeep of designated garden areas, collaborating closely with the Horticulture Supervisor. Key responsibilities encompass a variety of gardening tasks including planting, mowing, weeding, watering, fertilizing, spraying, pruning, and trimming.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the daily care, maintenance, and enhancement of assigned garden sections.
  • Administer and document the application of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides under guidance.
  • Utilize a diverse range of hand tools and landscaping power equipment effectively.
  • Maintain cleanliness in gardens by clearing away leaves, branches, and other debris.
  • Engage in all aspects of maintenance such as soil preparation, planting, transplanting, mulching, watering, weeding, fertilizing, pruning, mowing, raking, and blowing.
  • Monitor plant collections for signs of pests and diseases, promptly reporting any issues to the supervisor.

Qualifications and Educational Background:

  • A strong eagerness to expand knowledge of horticultural practices and techniques.
  • Proficiency in using various hand tools including shovels, trowels, rakes, shears, saws, loppers, wheelbarrows, and garden carts.
  • Capability to operate push mowers, riding mowers, string trimmers, and other power equipment efficiently.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow both written and verbal instructions.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of one year of experience or vocational training in horticulture or a related field is preferred.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary.

Physical Requirements:

Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Weekend work may be required.

Work Environment:

Employees may encounter outdoor weather conditions including extreme heat and humidity, as well as occasional exposure to wet conditions, extreme cold, and airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate.
