The Automotive Mechanic position at Killam Companies is responsible for maintaining vehicular equipment operation by completing inspections and preventive maintenance requirements, repairing vehicle deficiencies, making adjustments and alignments, and keeping records.
Key Responsibilities- Provide technical service to vehicles and equipment.
- Perform general and detailed repair of all trucks, engines, and components.
- Overhaul gas or diesel engines.
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical issues, including wheel-end assemblies, electrical systems, suspensions, A/C, or engine components.
- Install injectors, pistons, liners, cam shafts, cylinder heads, rod and main bearings, oil pans, clutches, fan hubs, differentials, fifth wheels, brakes, change or recharge batteries, and replace transmissions and other parts.
- Read job orders, observe, and listen to vehicles in operation to determine malfunctions and plan work procedures.
- Examine protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices on trucks and make adjustments as needed.
- Lubricate moving parts and drive repaired vehicles to verify conformance to specifications.
- Tag all warranty parts and returns to suppliers.
- Attend training classes as required to stay up-to-date with technical changes.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Technical or vocational training preferred.
- At least two to five years of experience in vehicle and engine repair for both diesel and gas engines.
- In-depth knowledge of vehicle and motor maintenance and repair, including diesel and gas engines.
- Strong knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, use, repair, and maintenance.
- Working knowledge of computer software used to create and track work orders for mechanical maintenance.
- Strong ability to read and understand maintenance/operations manuals for equipment specifications, parts, and procedures.
- Advanced mechanical skills.
- Basic mathematical skills.
- Strong planning, organizational, delegation, and time management skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Strong knowledge of and adherence to company and OSHA safety guidelines.
- Current Texas driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
- CDL is a plus.
- Stand for long periods of time.
- Lift 40-60 lbs. with or without assistance.
- Repeatedly use fingers and hands to grasp, handle, install, position, and move materials and manipulate tools.
- Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information through verbal communications.
- Average, ordinary visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents and operate various types of machinery and handheld equipment.
- Walk short distances on slippery, even, and/or uneven surfaces.
- Stand, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, turn, or crawl.
- Climb and balance on stairs, metal/wooden beams, ladders, or other structures/elevated areas.
- Work primarily at job sites performing work in outdoor weather conditions with exposure to extreme cold, heat, and noise.
- May also include exposure to dust, fumes, cleaning chemicals, and/or other harsh/hazardous solvents or disinfectants.
- Electrical components, power lines, or other electrical hazards.
- Rebar, blades, or other sharp objects/tools.
- High elevations, trenches, or crawl spaces.
- Possible travel locally during the work day between job sites, although some out-of-area travel may be expected with seldom overnight travel.
- Work irregular hours to include nights and weekends.
