Applicants must be at least 17 years old and physically capable of performing the work of the trade, which may include climbing, working from ladders and scaffolds, and lifting heavy objects. They must also be willing to work overtime, travel within the local jurisdiction, and attend classes as required.

The apprenticeship program is registered with the Department of Labor and meets standards established by the Commissioner. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
