Required Experience: Candidates must possess a minimum of one (1) year of clinical nursing experience in Surgical Services or two (2) years of surgical technology experience in an acute care environment, complemented by at least one (1) year of nursing experience in acute care. Alternatively, completion of a perioperative training program (AORN or equivalent) along with two years of acute care experience is acceptable.
Position Overview:
The Circulating Staff Nurse is a highly skilled and knowledgeable Registered Nurse (RN) dedicated to delivering exceptional nursing care and managing patient outcomes. Reporting directly to the Clinical Unit Supervisor of Perioperative Nursing, this role entails comprehensive accountability for organizing, planning, directing, coordinating, and providing high-quality, individualized patient and family-centered care. This is achieved through the application of the Watson Model of Care, ensuring that the unique needs and considerations of various age groups and populations are met. This position is aligned with the mission of MLK Community Healthcare, and employees are expected to embody the organization's core values while supporting its strategic objectives and quality improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Utilize the nursing process as a systematic approach to problem-solving, leveraging knowledge and experience to anticipate and fulfill patient and family needs.
- Conduct focused nursing assessments targeting areas that yield the most benefit for the patient population, recognizing subtle clinical changes and adjusting care plans accordingly.
- Apply knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, consistently integrating current research and critical thinking to inform clinical decisions.
- Engage in the Hospital's Patient Satisfaction initiatives during interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients throughout their healthcare journey, ensuring respect for patient rights as a core value.
- Communicate effectively using the SBAR method during all hand-off situations.
- Document patient care accurately, including assessments, interdisciplinary plans of care, implementation, evaluation, and adherence to the Watson Model of Care.
- Anticipate factors affecting patient comfort and modify interventions as needed, empowering patients and families to participate actively in recovery.
- Commit to addressing the educational needs of patients and families, utilizing appropriate resources to achieve positive outcomes.
- Collaborate with Care Managers to facilitate interdisciplinary discharge planning for specific patient populations.
- Review patient orders and communicate any changes in patient conditions to physicians and team members promptly.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions and document outcomes accordingly.
- Utilize patient classification systems in accordance with established standards.
- Demonstrate leadership by planning, supervising, instructing, and evaluating ancillary nursing personnel, ensuring thorough evaluations are conducted for registry and float staff.
- Maintain a professional appearance in accordance with dress code policies, including wearing identification badges.
- Ensure a safe and clean environment that meets regulatory standards, including Patient Safety Goals.
- Participate in the implementation of the unit-specific Quality and Performance Improvement Plan, completing monitoring forms and reporting findings to the Charge Nurse and Director of Perioperative Services.
- Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred; Associate's degree in nursing required.
- Qualifications/Experience: A minimum of one (1) to two (2) years of clinical nursing experience in Surgical Services is preferred, adhering to regulatory guidelines and standards of practice.
- Licensure: Current California Nursing License required; CNOR certification preferred.
- Special Skills/Knowledge: Bilingual skills (Spanish) preferred; basic computer proficiency; current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications; experience with Electronic Medical Records preferred.
