As a Horizontal Construction Engineer in the Army National Guard, you'll play a crucial role in preparing construction sites for various projects. Your primary responsibility will be to operate heavy equipment such as bulldozers, roadgraders, and cranes to clear and level the terrain. This involves analyzing the site's topography, identifying obstacles, and developing strategies to overcome them. You'll also be responsible for transporting heavy construction equipment and materials, as well as assisting in the performance of combat engineer missions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Analyze site information and place grade stakes
  • Cut and spread fill material with scrapers
  • Operate heavy equipment to clear and level the terrain
  • Transport heavy construction equipment and materials
  • Assist in combat engineer missions
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Maintenance and repair of heavy equipment
  • Identification of soil types and placement of grade stakes
  • Preference for working outdoors

Through your training, you'll develop the skills and experience to enjoy a civilian career in construction methods and engineering principles. You may also earn specialized certifications that enable you to step right into a civilian construction career. In the Army National Guard, you'll learn these valuable job skills while earning a regular paycheck and qualifying for tuition assistance.

Job Training:

Job training for Horizontal Construction Engineers consists of nine weeks of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills, and nine weeks of Advanced Individual Training. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and part in the field.
