The Social Justice Learning Institute is committed to enhancing the educational, health, and overall well-being of youth of color. We empower these young individuals to take charge of their educational journeys by utilizing research as a catalyst for community and social transformation. Our program equips students with the skills to investigate issues within their communities through a comprehensive yearlong curriculum, while also providing essential academic support such as tutoring, homework assistance, and college preparatory education.
As the Academic and Career Services Coordinator (ACSC), your primary responsibility will be to cultivate meaningful relationships with students, enabling them to establish and achieve personal and academic objectives. A critical measure of success for this role is guiding students towards high school graduation and facilitating their transition into college or career pathways. The ACSC will play a pivotal role in working with students on skill development, assisting with college applications, and connecting them with necessary personal and academic resources.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe ACSC is an integral member of the program team that executes the Young Men's Program. This team comprises the Program and Curriculum Coach, the school site Teacher-of-Record, the school principal, the school counselor, and support from SJLI's Educational Equity Programs Director and Manager, along with the National Director of Programs.
Essential Duties:- Teaching & Coaching:
- Participate in curriculum and program training sessions.
- Possess the ability to teach the Young Men's Program curriculum if necessary.
- Facilitate lessons focused on college and career readiness throughout the academic year.
- Develop individualized academic plans with students and monitor their progress towards established goals.
- Guide students through financial aid processes, college applications, and trade school applications.
- Student Support and Relationship Building:
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with students.
- Facilitate meetings involving students, counselors, teachers, and parents.
- Support academic intervention initiatives.
- Collaborate with the Program & Curriculum Coach to build relationships with on-campus staff and administrators.
- Plan college trips, program activities, field trips, retreats, and other off-campus events in partnership with the PCC.
- Connect students to SAT/ACT preparation courses.
- Familiarize students with UC, CSU, HBCU/Private Universities, and community college application processes.
- Organize and lead college application workshops.
- Assist seniors with their college applications.
- Maintain relationships with school counselors.
- Data Management:
- Utilize SJLI's online database effectively.
- Collect and input student data from various sources.
- Track and manage data efficiently.
- Create site-specific data reports.
- Generate monthly reports.
- Possess a growth mindset and seek opportunities for skill enhancement.
- Demonstrate a commitment to the mission, goals, and values of the Social Justice Learning Institute.

- Deliver high-quality work and manage personal and team responsibilities effectively.

- Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in Education, Ethnic or Black Studies, Psychology, Social Work, or related fields.
- 3 – 5 years of experience in high school counseling or in an instructional or student services role with high school students.
