Overview:
The Surgical First Assistant plays a crucial role in the operating room, providing essential support to the surgeon during surgical procedures. As defined by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), this position is vital for ensuring optimal patient outcomes through effective assistance in exposure, hemostasis, and closure techniques.
Beyond intraoperative responsibilities, the Surgical First Assistant is also involved in preoperative and postoperative care, contributing to comprehensive patient management.
This role is performed under the guidance and supervision of the surgeon, adhering to established hospital policies and relevant regulations.
CHRISTUS Health is dedicated to delivering high-quality care through skilled professionals and advanced medical technologies, ensuring that patients receive the best possible treatment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Exhibit proficiency in the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
- Assist the surgeon throughout preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative tasks, ensuring patient safety and comfort.
- Facilitate the proper positioning of patients based on surgical requirements and anatomical considerations, which may include preoperative assessments.
Placement of Foley catheters, application of tourniquets, insertion of intravenous lines, and other necessary procedures.
- Execute specific surgical tasks as per the surgeon's preferences, including incision and closure techniques, providing exposure, and achieving hemostasis through various methods.
- Assist in the manipulation and removal of tissues, as well as the implantation and securing of devices and drains, ensuring appropriate dressing materials are applied.
- Perform additional procedures under the surgeon's supervision, such as vein and graft harvesting, as well as graft and implant preparation, if adequately trained.
- Carry out other duties as assigned by the surgeon, in compliance with state and local regulations.
Qualifications:
A High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Graduation from an accredited Surgical First Assistant Program, State Board accredited Vocational School of Nursing, or completion of a Surgical Technology program is mandatory. A minimum of 2 years of Surgical Tech experience is preferred. BLS certification is required, while ACLS certification is preferred.
