Position Overview

The Operating Room Registered Nurse is responsible for the comprehensive assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of direct and indirect care for patients undergoing surgical procedures. This role requires collaboration within an interdisciplinary team to deliver patient-centered nursing care, advocating for patients and their families throughout the surgical process.

The Registered Nurse will assist in preoperative and postoperative care under the guidance of the Chief Medical Officer and surgical team. Utilizing evidence-based nursing practices, the nurse will effectively manage unexpected situations and contribute to the surgical intervention of various conditions in a timely and professional manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist medical personnel with surgical procedures within the scope of practice.
  • Coordinate educational initiatives for pre and postoperative patients.
  • Review patient vital signs, medical history, and medications prior to surgery.
  • Establish measurable patient goals through nursing care plans in accordance with NANDA guidelines.
  • Ensure patient safety by adhering to pre-surgical protocols.
  • Monitor emotional and physical well-being throughout the surgical process.
  • Report any changes in patient conditions to the medical team.
  • Support minor and acute surgical procedures and stabilize trauma patients for transport.
  • Prepare necessary materials and equipment for daily procedures and emergencies.
  • Participate in surgical procedures as a circulator and scrub nurse.
  • Maintain effective communication within and across departments to address patient needs.
  • Respond to surgical emergencies, including cardiac and respiratory failures.
  • Inform patients about surgical procedures and what to expect.
  • Consult with the surgical team to prioritize patient care in the operating room.
  • Assist in the preparation, sterilization, and maintenance of surgical equipment.
  • Conduct ongoing education programs for operating room nursing staff.
  • Provide perioperative care for patients of all ages undergoing various surgical interventions.
  • Assess and evaluate nursing care for diverse patient populations, including those with disabilities and language barriers.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives to ensure compliance with national standards.
  • Document patient conditions accurately, including progress and follow-up care.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience Required:

  • Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience.
  • Clinical experience in an Operating Room setting.
  • Experience in scrub and circulating roles, preferably with open cases.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with at least twelve months of Operating Room clinical experience within the last three years.
Education Required:

  • Current and unrestricted nursing license from any US State, District of Columbia, or US Territory.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Associate, Diploma, or Baccalaureate).
  • CNOR certification is preferred.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications from the American Heart Association.
  • ATLS certification is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is typically performed in an office environment.
  • Involves prolonged periods of sitting and standing.
  • May require bending, stooping, and lifting up to 15 lbs.

Other Qualifications:

  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English for effective communication.
  • This position is unaccompanied.
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status is required.
  • Ability to obtain US DOD CNACI clearance is necessary.
  • Must be willing to relocate as required.
  • A valid passport is required and must be maintained during employment.
