Lead CNC Machinist

POSITION SUMMARY

This role is situated within the Prototype and Manufacturing Division (PMD) machine shop. The PMD is pivotal in delivering essential hardware to support operational requirements. Responsibilities include overhauling critical components and manufacturing a diverse array of support equipment tailored to meet urgent fleet needs.

The position involves operating advanced Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machinery, including mills, lathes, grinders, and drill presses, alongside various hand tools.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Core responsibilities encompass the following tasks. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

• Operate CNC machines to create new and replacement components for mechanical systems.
• Plan machining processes by analyzing written directives and specifications. Interpret blueprints and manuals to ascertain dimensions, tolerances, and operational sequences.
• Utilize a range of machinist hand tools and precision measuring devices to set up and operate standard machine tools.
• Measure and mark dimensions on materials to guide subsequent machining activities.
• Securely align and fasten fixtures, cutting tools, and materials onto machines.
• Select suitable tools and materials for effective machinery preparation.
• Monitor machine feed and speed during operations to ensure adherence to specifications.
• Set up, adjust, and operate various machine tools to perform precision machining tasks.
• Identify equipment malfunctions or machining discrepancies and make necessary adjustments to maintain production quality.
• Contribute to resolving machining or quality-related challenges.
• Engage in personal development through available training opportunities.
• Organize daily tasks in alignment with company policies and supervisory guidance to optimize productivity.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment, reporting any hazards or unsafe practices to supervisors.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED required, along with:

• Over ten years of experience in CNC setup and operation, typically acquired in a machine shop or vocational training.
• Proficient understanding of Fanuc control systems.
• Familiarity with MasterCam programming.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
• Competence in using basic measuring tools to verify dimensions.
• Mathematical skills for calculating distances and angles.
• MasterCam experience is essential.

CERTIFICATIONS

GD&T certification is mandatory.

JOB-SPECIFIC SKILLS

Experience in operating both manual and CNC machines in a manufacturing context, including job setup, tool selection, and machine operation.

Ability to produce precision components with tight tolerances and to determine necessary tools and equipment for various tasks.
