A Young Adult Peer Mentor (YAPM) utilizes their personal journey of overcoming mental health challenges, substance use issues, and/or significant life traumas to assist others facing similar obstacles. The YAPM is equipped to share their experiences with intention, aiming to foster hope and motivation among Young Adults (YAs) who are navigating comparable difficulties. Through a strengths-based approach, YAPMs offer peer-to-peer education, coaching, and support, establishing meaningful connections with YAs. They focus on listening empathetically, recognizing the unique strengths of each individual, and enhancing communication with family, friends, and support networks.
Key Qualifications:
- A young adult with personal experience in managing mental health needs, substance use, or traumatic life events.
- Minimum of one year of experience working with young adults.
- Ability to adopt a strengths-based perspective, providing unconditional support without judgment.
- Flexibility to respond effectively to young adults in stress or crisis situations.
- Familiarity with various state systems, such as DMH, DCF, DDS, and DYS is preferred.
- Strong organizational, communication, and computer/social media skills are advantageous.
- A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are preferred.
