The John Carter Brown Library at Brown University is a world-renowned center for research focused on the early Americas (15th-19th centuries) and based on its exceptional collections; the JCB supports research and researchers through its digital initiatives, fellowships and programs including for Brown faculty and students and communities locally and around the world. The JCB is committed to expert cataloguing of its collections, its robust cataloguing program has been long recognized for leading early modern bibliographic information and cataloguing practices.
Job SummaryWe seek a Rare Materials Cataloguer (with an emphasis on Spanish and Portuguese languages) to join our growing team. Working with JCB staff across departments, and reporting to the Head of Cataloguing Services, the Rare Materials Cataloguer will support the library's essential discovery and access work through cataloguing and digitization.
Responsibilities- Create MARC records using various DCRM standards to do excellent, full-level work on library collections.
- Create NACO records and occasional SACO records.
- Work with Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Excel.
- Support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
- MLS degree from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of five years' experience using various DCRM standards and OCLC Connexion to create records for printed monographs, broadsides, and serials.
- Fluency or demonstrated proficiency in the Spanish and Portuguese languages.
- Working knowledge of Latin, and other European languages and / or indigenous Latin American languages.
- Knowledge of European and Latin American history, preferred.
- Strong English language communication skills.
- Knowledge of enumerative bibliographical sources and research techniques, including knowledge of major reference sources covering rare and early printed materials.
- NACO independence and experience developing SACO proposals, desirable.
- Considerable knowledge of online database searching, technical processing, bibliographic utilities, library physical processing and preservation, and careful handling of rare materials.
- Preferred experience using the Exlibris integrated library system (ILS) for Alma and Primo.
