Position Overview

The City of Torrance is seeking a Choral Music Instructor to support the Torrance Theatre Company.

Departmental Focus
The Community Services Department provides residents with opportunities to enhance their sense of purpose and self-worth through various programs in Cultural Arts, Library, Parks, and Recreation. The department is dedicated to delivering quality services and enriching experiences for all who engage with the City of Torrance.

Division Mission
The Cultural Services Division aims to establish Torrance as a vibrant hub for cultural programs and arts education. This includes developing the Torrance Cultural Arts Center as a center for learning and excellence, offering classes and events that enrich the community through artistic training for all skill levels.

Key Programs
Major initiatives within the Division encompass the Torrance Art Museum, Torrance Theatre Company, Torrance Civic Chorale, and numerous classes across various artistic disciplines for all ages. The Division also hosts community events such as the annual Cherry Blossom Cultural Festival and Summer Concerts series.

Role Responsibilities
The Choral Music Instructor will assist the conductor in the planning, reviewing, and rehearsal of musical pieces. Responsibilities include conducting selected rehearsals, providing accompaniment for chorale and jazz ensembles, warming up choirs, collaborating with professional music staff for performances, transposing music, and recording tracks as necessary.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Advanced piano proficiency;
  • Strong understanding of music theory, harmony, rhythm, and composition;
  • Familiarity with popular, jazz, rock, musical theater, and classical genres;
  • Knowledge of choral vocal techniques;
  • Understanding of proper diction and foreign languages in relation to musical works.

Working Hours
This is a recurrent, part-time position with flexible hours, primarily scheduled around performances. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
