Diesel Engine Mechanic - Fleet Maintenance Specialist

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Diesel Engine Mechanic to join our team at Hire Military Talent. As a Diesel Engine Mechanic, you will be responsible for inspecting and servicing diesel locomotives, diagnosing malfunctions, and repairing or replacing diesel engine components.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and Service Diesel Locomotives: Conduct thorough inspections of diesel locomotives to ensure compliance with company, federal, and industry standards.
  • Diagnose Malfunctions: Use technical expertise to diagnose malfunctions in diesel engines, air brake systems, fuel systems, and other mechanical systems.
  • Repair and Replace Components: Repair, replace, or rebuild diesel engine components as needed to ensure optimal performance.
  • Operate Equipment: Safely operate equipment, including measuring instruments, precision machines, hand tools, and material handling equipment.
  • Communicate Effectively: Communicate technical information and job-related details with colleagues, supervisors, and customers.
  • Read and Interpret Technical Information: Read and interpret information from diagrams, schematics, graphs, and charts to inform repair and maintenance decisions.
  • Ensure Compliance: Ensure all equipment and materials are available and ready for use, and that all work is performed in compliance with railroad rules and regulations.

Requirements:

  • Education and Experience: 4 years of education or work experience (or a combination of both) as a mechanic repairing trucks, ships, farm equipment, airplanes, trains, automobiles, or diesels, or current journeyman's mechanical card.
  • Communication Skills: Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to colleagues and supervisors.
  • Driver's License: Valid driver's license.
  • Visual Inspection Skills: Experience making quick and accurate visual inspections at near and far distances.
  • Reading Comprehension: Experience reading and understanding instructions, including operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents.
  • Pre-Employment Testing: Candidates must pass a pre-employment Diesel Mechanic Aptitude Test and qualify on a Physical Ability Test (PAT) prior to employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree: Associate's degree in a mechanical-related field.
  • Certifications: Certified and/or licensed as a diesel mechanic by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
  • Training Programs: Completed a formal auto/diesel engine training program.
  • Experience: Experience as a mechanic in other fields, such as military, aviation, nuclear, or marine.
  • Welding Experience: Experience welding or holding a welding certificate.
  • Outdoor Experience: Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: Experience working in an environment that requires wearing personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection.
  • Heavy Equipment Experience: Experience working with, on, and around moving heavy equipment.
