Job Summary

Mercy Medical Center is seeking a skilled Respiratory Therapist to join our team. As a Respiratory Therapist, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care and support to patients with respiratory conditions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide bedside respiratory care to patients as assigned by supervisors and given on the physician's written order for all respiratory therapy modalities in an inpatient setting.
  • Perform ventilator set-up and airway maintenance and monitoring on critical care patients to include all age groups.
  • Attend and assist all code blues, high-risk deliveries, C-sections, and MET calls hospital-wide.
  • Perform CPAP/Bi-PAP set-up and monitoring in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform non-invasive cardiology procedures such as EKGs in the Emergency Department, and complete necessary paperwork.
  • Assist physicians with bedside bronchoscopies in accordance with the Respiratory Therapy procedure.
  • Perform oximetry spot checks and oximetry sleep studies and accurately process corresponding paperwork.
  • Perform ABG sticks and utilize the I-Stat machine and communicate ABG results to nursing staff or physicians.
  • Perform equipment function, check-out, and cleaning as necessary in accordance with Respiratory Therapy policies and procedures.
  • Provide patient education on all modalities of Respiratory Care.
  • Participate in the charge role as applicable.
  • Perform pulmonary function studies as ordered by a physician in an accurate and responsible manner following manufacturers and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that the patient is performing the test to the best of his/her ability by observing the patient and comparing the test results as reproducible on at least three trials.
  • Perform quality control procedures and maintenance on equipment used in the testing area to ensure accuracy in test results.
  • Perform finger stick for testing hemoglobin and utilize hemaque machine.
  • Perform machine calibration each morning prior to testing and log results of calibration.
  • Assist in bronchoscopy if trained in the area.
  • Assist in exercise laryngoscopes.
  • Assist in pulmonary stress procedures.
  • Assist with Trach Clinic.
  • Provide Patient Education on outpatient services.
  • Act as primary preceptor and resource for new staff.
  • Presents 1 educational topic to RT staff annually and to an ancillary department.
  • Participate in department quality improvement process, data collection, or is a member of a hospital committee.
Requirements
  • State of Iowa Respiratory Care Practitioner License required.
  • Basic Life Support in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification will be required within 1 year of employment with the exception of PFT Staff.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required.
