Position Summary: The Metallurgical Process Engineer will oversee metallurgical operations and heat treatment processes, providing essential technical and metallurgical assistance across various departments.
Key Responsibilities: This role reports directly to the Quality Assurance Manager and includes:
- Advising on the acquisition of new heat treatment equipment and managing capital expenditure projects with vendors, including installation and on-site training.
- Researching and implementing innovative heat treatment technologies aimed at cost reduction and process enhancement.
- Monitoring heat treatment operations to ensure adherence to internal protocols and customer specifications, including both internal and subcontracted processes.
- Investigating metallurgical and heat treatment-related complaints, documenting findings, and initiating necessary corrective actions.
- Conducting tests and running samples for hardness and metallurgical evaluations.
- Leading NADCAP heat treatment and nondestructive audits to ensure compliance.
- Performing internal audits related to material and heat treatment standards.
- Visiting suppliers to recommend process improvements concerning surface treatment issues.
- Developing training materials and procedures related to heat treatment and metallurgical processes.
- Participating in the assessment of non-conforming products and corrective action processes associated with materials and heat treatment.
- Creating and delivering technical presentations.
- Enhancing key quality metrics related to scrap and rework through lean and continuous improvement initiatives.
- In-depth knowledge of heat treatment processes and equipment.
- Strong foundational understanding of metallurgy and microstructures.
- Ability to interpret metal and surface treatment specifications and align them with appropriate manufacturing processes.
- Experience in executing and monitoring engineering initiatives in compliance with NADCAP for continuous improvement.
- Management of mechanical testing to ensure customer requirements are met efficiently.
- Experience in creating and updating material and process specifications, reports, and testing plans.
- Familiarity with material characterization and failure analysis techniques.
- Ability to work independently as a technical expert and lead small teams when necessary.
- Proven problem-solving skills for complex technical challenges.
- Capability to execute tasks with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency in spreadsheet and database software for data compilation, analysis, and presentation.
- Knowledge of process improvement methodologies such as Six Sigma and lean manufacturing.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to ensure task completion.
- Experience with chemical and heat treatment NADCAP compliance.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, or Material Science & Engineering; or equivalent professional experience.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in heat treatment and metallurgical processes.
- Project management experience is advantageous.
- Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification is preferred.
- A sense of urgency and flexibility to adapt to the evolving needs of the organization.
- Physical job requirements may include standing, manual dexterity, lifting, carrying, bending, and stooping.
