Position Summary
The Certified Medication Assistant (CMA) functions as a caregiver, delivering resident-focused nursing care and daily living support to assigned individuals under the guidance of a supervising nurse. This role requires knowledge of and the ability to provide age-appropriate care that addresses both the physical and psychological needs of residents according to their care plans.
Responsibilities include assisting with essential health care tasks such as daily living activities, which may encompass bathing, grooming, dressing, and recording vital signs. The CMA also offers psycho-social support and personal care to residents, assists with mobility and transfers using appropriate techniques, and engages in exercises to promote well-being.
In addition, the CMA administers prescribed medications as directed by a licensed nurse, ensuring compliance with state regulations. Documentation of resident care outcomes, medication administration, and any changes in condition is essential. The role also involves collecting non-invasive specimens and vital signs, as well as maintaining cleanliness in living areas through housekeeping and laundry services.
Participation in wellness and recreational programs is encouraged, fostering resident engagement. The CMA may also contribute to departmental committees and task forces as necessary.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or GED is preferred, though not mandatory. Candidates should be at least 18 years old, with prior experience in clinical or nursing assistant roles in long-term care settings being advantageous.
Annual competency testing and continuing education credits are required, with a minimum of 12 hours of education annually as per state mandates. Relevant certifications must be maintained, and a valid driver's license and auto insurance may be necessary.
State-specific requirements include:
- Iowa: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification is required.
- Minnesota: Nursing assistant certification and completion of a 75-hour course are necessary.
- North Dakota: CNA certification and successful completion of a Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course are mandatory.
- South Dakota: Completion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course is required.
