Job Summary

This position is responsible for servicing and maintaining all pipeline systems within the laboratory complex, as well as extending those services to all-standard as well as experimental research equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install and operate high- and low-pressure piping systems, plumbing systems, and related equipment.
  • Align pipes, valves, fittings, and joints for accurate match.
  • Install and operate relief valves, check valves, pressure regulators, expansion joints, and other pressure supporting and controlling devices.
  • Perform hydrostatic tests on pressure vessels such as retort chambers, air receivers, and pulping digesters.
  • Trace and troubleshoot pipelines, systems, and equipment to locate and repair leaks and trouble spots.
Requirements
  • Must be a licensed plumber in accordance with Wisconsin Statutes.
  • Must have knowledge of shop mathematics to determine internal pipe diameter required to pass desired flow rate at desired velocity.
  • Must be able to lay out angles, arcs, circles, etc. to control expansion of piping when different heat is applied.
  • Must have knowledge of laboratory service systems including high-pressure steam.
Working Conditions

Work is done both indoors and outdoors. Subject to burns from hot water, chemicals, and steam while repairing leaks on high-pressure steam piping; strains, cuts, and bruises while working with wrenches on heavy pipes; and abnormal heat, dirt, and dust while installing, repairing, and insulating underground steam line.

This is a bargaining unit position and is represented by either NFFE, AFGE, or NAGE. Forest Service daycare facilities are not available. Government Housing is not available.
