Position Overview:
The Rehabilitation Nursing Specialist is responsible for coordinating and delivering restorative nursing care to residents while providing oversight and mentorship to clinical staff. This role emphasizes achieving and sustaining optimal physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being. The scope of responsibilities may vary according to state-specific regulations under The Nurse Practice Act.
Key Responsibilities:
The following tasks are standard for this position. This list is not exhaustive, and additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
- Supervises, directs, and assesses the performance of Restorative Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA).
- Administers treatments for assigned residents and maintains documentation in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Participates in the orientation and ongoing training of staff members.
- Initiates the Rehabilitation/Restorative Functional Maintenance Plan upon discharge from skilled therapy.
- Collaborates with the Dietary Manager and Registered Dietitian to implement the weight prevention program effectively.
- Records and reports significant observations regarding residents' conditions and any notable changes.
- Coordinates nursing care for residents scheduled for therapy or other departmental procedures.
- Assists in emergency interventions for sudden adverse developments in residents.
- Initiates restorative nursing as needed during custodial stays.
- Ensures that the Restorative Certified Nursing Assistant Functional Maintenance Plan aligns with measurable objectives and interventions outlined in the care plan.
- Verifies that residents have the necessary equipment to prevent further decline, such as positioning aids and splints.
- Conducts thorough assessments of new residents for disabilities or weaknesses requiring therapy.
- Identifies residents needing range of motion exercises and consults with physicians or physical therapists for specific exercise limitations.
- Obtains physician orders for skilled therapy and ensures prompt implementation.
- Assists in the preparation, execution, and ongoing evaluation of residents' care plans, particularly during significant changes in condition.
- Provides emotional support to residents and their families as necessary.
- Completes the Minimum Data Set (MDS) in accordance with facility policies.
- Attends care plan, Medicare, and rehabilitation meetings.
- Fosters positive interpersonal relationships and enhances staff morale.
- Ensures inventory and supplies are adequately maintained and communicates needs for support services.
- Responds to resident call lights and ensures regular checks on all residents.
- Reports any suspected abuse to the Director of Nursing or Administrator immediately.
- Performs additional tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
To succeed in this role, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The following qualifications are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required. Educational Background and Experience:
Graduate of an accredited LPN/LVN School of Nursing
Valid LPN/LVN license from the State of Alabama
Current CPR certification
One year of nursing experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Strong communication skills with residents, families, and all facility levels.
