Position Overview:
The role involves working primarily on a Medical Surgical floor with some surgical overflow. This unit handles a variety of medical cases including respiratory, gastrointestinal, and behavioral health issues. Patients who have been in the emergency room for an extended period will be transitioned to this unit for further care and discharge planning.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in Medical Surgical nursing is required.
- Proficiency in EPIC electronic health records is essential.
- Ability to read and interpret telemetry is necessary.
Work Schedule:
- Shifts are 12 hours long, from 7 AM to 7:30 PM.
- Weekend shifts: 5 shifts within a 6-week period are expected.
- Holiday shifts may be required based on unit needs.
Unit Information:
- Unit: Medical Surgical - 6th Floor
- Total Beds: 42
- Nurse to Patient Ratios: Typically 1:5, with occasional 1:6 ratios.
Additional Insights:
- RNs are not required to titrate drips.
- Commonly used drips include heparin, PCA, and morphine.
Charge Nurse Availability:
- A Charge Nurse is present on each shift, primarily overseeing operations and rarely taking on patient care unless necessary.
- Day shifts also include an ADT nurse to assist with admissions, discharges, and other tasks.
Support Staff:
- Patient care technicians are available at a ratio of 1:8.
Respiratory Equipment:
- Equipment includes CPAP and BiPAP, managed by respiratory therapy, along with high-flow systems.
Monitoring Support:
- Virtual telemetry technicians are utilized, with RNs responsible for interpreting their own telemetry strips. The unit is transitioning to Philips monitoring systems.
