Role Summary:

Under the general oversight of the NICU Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, the NICU Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing critical life-support, resuscitation, monitoring, and various medical gas therapies to patients. This role involves assisting individuals of all ages with both acute and chronic conditions, facilitating their return to a productive lifestyle through education and the application of diverse therapeutic techniques.

The therapist may conduct diagnostic assessments and monitoring using spirometry at the bedside, as well as in conjunction with physician orders for pulmonary function evaluations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, develop care plans, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals. Patient care constitutes 100% of work hours.
  • Delegate patient care tasks appropriately to support staff, including Respiratory Therapists, interns, and students, ensuring effective communication and guidance.
  • Engage with colleagues and other professionals, including physicians and nurses, to guarantee optimal patient care. Actively participate in daily bedside rounds.
  • Uphold high standards of clinical excellence in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Exhibit proficiency in various departmental specialties, clinical areas, and life support equipment, as assigned. Demonstrate competency in special procedures and protocols.
  • Administer various therapeutic modalities as prescribed by physician orders or established protocols, ensuring maximum benefit and patient safety.
  • Manage and monitor medical gases as per physician orders and approved protocols, utilizing appropriate delivery devices.
  • Evaluate the pulmonary status of patients, communicate clinical findings to physicians, and recommend suitable therapies.
  • Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, providing basic life support and assessing patient responses to interventions.
  • Collect and analyze arterial and capillary blood samples, verify and interpret results, and document findings appropriately.
  • Perform specific duties as determined by site assignments, which may include equipment cleaning, maintenance, and testing.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapist program.
  • Associate's degree from an accredited Respiratory Therapist Educational Program.
  • Current Respiratory Therapist License from the state of practice.
  • Successful completion of the National Board of Respiratory Care registration examination.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials.
  • Active Florida RRT License required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in PICU/NICU settings.
  • BLS certification required; ACLS, PALS, and/or NRP must be obtained within 3 months of hire.
