Key ResponsibilitiesThe Echo Technologist is responsible for preparing patients and conducting ultrasound examinations as per physician directives while adhering to departmental protocols to ensure accurate imaging of the specified anatomical areas.
- Communicates procedures to patients, addressing any inquiries and reviewing medical histories for relevant information.
- Utilizes ultrasound equipment and techniques to ensure patient comfort and the consistency of results.
- Conducts routine maintenance, calibration, and cleaning of ultrasound equipment following manufacturer guidelines.
Patient Care Delivery: Provides comprehensive care across all age groups during ultrasound examinations and related procedures.
- Acts as a communication bridge between patients and physicians.
- Performs essential patient care functions.
- Responds to emergencies within the scope of practice.
- Maintains accurate patient documentation, updating charts with relevant information.
- Alerts nursing staff to any significant changes in patient conditions during procedures.
Clinical Data Management: Reviews and organizes clinical data in line with departmental timelines for physician review of echo results.
- Ensures the quality of diagnostic procedures, providing the interpreting physician with necessary information for effective evaluations.
Administrative Duties: Engages in general office tasks such as answering calls, scheduling appointments, maintaining patient records, and managing supply orders.
- Participates in the inventory and ordering of medical supplies and equipment.
Cultural Competence: Demonstrates effective communication strategies and understands how cultural factors influence patient interactions and care delivery.
QualificationsEducation and Experience:
Completion of an accredited diagnostic ultrasound or echo sonography program is required, along with a preferred year of post-graduate experience in cardiac ultrasound or demonstrated proficiency in diagnostic imaging.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Familiarity with current principles and techniques related to diagnostic sonography.
- Understanding of the operation and application of ultrasound equipment.
- Awareness of standards and regulations governing sonographic examinations.
- Knowledge of departmental protocols for diagnostic procedures.
- Comprehension of medical terminology, anatomical positioning, and physiology.
- Ability to perform cardiac ultrasound procedures effectively.
- Capability to assist physicians with specific techniques, such as ultrasonic needle guidance.
- Exhibit supportive and service-oriented behavior.
- Demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills.
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
- Communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms.
- Utilize independent judgment to meet objectives.
- Read and communicate in English proficiently.
- Operate office equipment and software competently.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Licensure and Certification:
- Current registration by ARDMS or certification by Cardiovascular Credentialing International as a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS).
- Current BLS Certification for healthcare providers.
- For non-registered Echo Technologists, a one-year period from hire is provided to obtain ARDMS registration.
