About the Position

Serve as an Animal Health Technician (Equine) at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall (JBM-HH) with duty at the Caisson Detachment of the 3rd US Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), responsible for performing and assisting with complicated technical procedures involving equine diagnostic imaging, surgery, medicine, critical or general care, or any combination of veterinary support work in support of the Veterinary Services equine mission.

Responsibilities
  • Perform and record monthly stable inspections.
  • Analyze and evaluate environmental sanitation programs for the herd; set conditions, when necessary, to isolate, quarantine, vaccinate, and establish preventive medicine procedures in the facility.
  • Administer daily medication, estimate weights of working equines, update body condition scores.
  • Assist veterinarian with examination, emergencies, and routine procedures (fluid therapy, drug dose calculation, anesthetic and sedation adjustment by heart/respiratory rate, intravenous catheter insertion).
  • Coordinate with and aid Animal Care Specialists with monthly and quarterly veterinary specific training.
  • Assist in feed plan development, feed and supplement analysis, and ensure daily grooming and care of equines are conducted to acceptable industry standard.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Zoology, Biology, Chemistry, or Agricultural subjects.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12.

Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18.

Add the two percentages.

Selective Placement Factor: This position requires a current, valid license as a Licensed Veterinary Technician, Certified Veterinary Technician, Registered Veterinary Technician or Equivalent Licensure in a state, the District of Columbia, or a territory of the United States.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Animal Husbandry Communications Safety and Quality Care Teaches Others Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-08).

Education FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
