As a Public Defender 2, you will be responsible for advocating for indigent clients in assigned cases at every stage of the criminal justice system. This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires strong communication and negotiation skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advocate for clients in court at pre-trial hearings, bench or jury trials, sentencings, and other court hearings.
  • Negotiate plea bargains, dismissals, or other disposition of assigned cases with prosecuting attorneys.
  • Investigate facts and prepare defense for assigned cases to determine the merits of cases and appropriate course of action.
  • Interview, confer, and advise clients on merits of appropriate course of actions, including seeking a dismissal, plea, or trial.
  • Locate and interview witnesses.
  • Conduct discovery, including depositions.
  • Plan case strategy and prepare for trial.
  • Maintain appropriate communication with client about status of the case and answer client questions.
  • May direct work of investigators consistent with internal office policies.
  • Identify potential legal issues to advance client's case, research applicable law, and draft appropriate motions and briefs.
  • Prepare by typing and printing various legal documents, including written arraignments, written guilty pleas, motions, briefs, letters, and other documents.
  • Maintain client case files, prepares public defender time reports to the court, and closes files consistent with office policies.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited law school, possession of a current license to practice law in the State of Iowa, and experience equal to two years of full-time work in professional legal criminal trial advocacy or prosecution.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Public Defender 1.
