Job Description

This Family Law Extern position will support our family law and immigration programs by staffing the Family Law Assistance Network (FLAN) remotely and in person at DC Superior Court. The Extern will conduct legal research and analysis, update materials for distribution to the public, and prepare for/executing the immigration clinic.

The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and able to work well under pressure. They will have the opportunity to develop their skills in legal research and writing, client interaction, and case management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Conduct in-depth research on various legal issues, case law, statutes, and regulations.
  2. Assist in the preparation of legal documents, such as motions, pleadings, contracts, and briefs.
  3. Participate in client and customer interviews, gathering facts, and helping to prepare clients for court appearances.
  4. Observe court proceedings, hearings, and trials.
  5. Assist with the organization and management of case files.
Requirements and Qualifications

To be considered for this position, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a for-credit externship program.
  • Have completed at least two semesters of law school.
  • Have a course in legal research and writing.
  • Have a record of academic and/or professional accomplishment.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to public interest law.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
Salary and Benefits

This is an unpaid position, but we offer the opportunity to gain valuable experience in civil legal services, working with a team of dedicated professionals who transform lives by providing free legal assistance. The estimated salary for this position is $30,000 - $40,000 per year, based on industry standards and the location.
