Position Summary:
The Cardio-Thoracic Physician Assistant (CTPA) plays a crucial role in our medical team, delivering direct patient care under the guidance of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons. This integral member of the Open Heart Program is responsible for performing both surgical and non-surgical procedures in the Operating Room and at the bedside within Critical Care Units. Utilizing advanced critical thinking skills, the CTPA follows established clinical guidelines to provide exceptional care to patients before and after surgical procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts endoscopic vein harvest and other surgical procedures as directed by the supervising surgeon.
- Evaluates and formulates treatment plans for pre- and post-operative patients in critical care settings.
- Complies with medical staff protocols during daily rounds, including therapy prescriptions and documentation in patient records.
- Collaborates effectively with Medical Staff, Nursing, Pharmacy, and other healthcare professionals.
- Prioritizes patient rounds in coordination with Nursing and supervising physicians.
- Ensures adherence to The Joint Commission standards and hospital policies regarding medication management and aseptic techniques.
- Actively engages in patient care during emergencies, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Follows Society of Thoracic Surgeons' standards for documentation in cardiac surgery patients' medical records.
- Maintains a professional demeanor in all communications with patients, families, and colleagues.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
- Expertise in critical care medicine and surgical procedures.
- In-depth understanding of cardiac rhythm management and hemodynamics.
- Comprehensive knowledge of cardiopulmonary medications and intravenous management.
- Proficiency in the use of therapeutic devices such as IABP and Impella.
- Experience with endoscopic vein harvesting techniques.
- Familiarity with Ventricular Assist Devices.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
- Master's degree in a healthcare-related field.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience as a First Assistant in Open Heart surgical procedures.
- Background in cardiovascular care.
- Prior surgical experience.
Licensure and Certification:
- Current Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner license from the appropriate regulatory board.
- Certification as a Physician Assistant (PA-C) or Nurse Practitioner (APRN-C).
- Current ACLS certification from the American Heart Association.
