About the Graduate Nurse Rotational Program

UPMC Shadyside is pleased to announce the launch of the Graduate Nurse Rotational Program, a comprehensive training initiative designed to equip newly graduated nurses with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Program Overview

The Graduate Nurse Rotational Program is a 12-month program that provides participants with the opportunity to rotate through various surgical units within the hospital's surgical service line. This immersive experience allows nurses to gain a broad understanding of the surgical care continuum, from pre-operative to post-operative care, and develop expertise in a range of specialties, including thoracic surgery, surgical oncology, orthopedic surgery, and neurosurgery.

What to Expect

As a participant in the Graduate Nurse Rotational Program, you can expect to:

  • Rotate through various surgical units, gaining hands-on experience and developing expertise in a range of specialties
  • Work closely with experienced nurses and physicians to develop your clinical skills and knowledge
  • Participate in educational programs and workshops to enhance your understanding of surgical care and patient outcomes
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and participate in unit-based councils and committees
Support and Development

UPMC is committed to investing in the growth and development of our nurses. As a participant in the Graduate Nurse Rotational Program, you can expect:

  • Generous sign-on bonus of up to $10,000* for graduate nurses
  • Monthly loan repayment program, offering $20,000* in loan repayment paid over three years
  • Up to five and a half weeks of paid time off annually, plus seven paid holidays each year
  • Dedicated career ladders allowing you to achieve your highest potential while rewarding you for your experience and advanced education
  • Tuition reimbursement of up to $6,000 per academic year at any accredited institution, available to employees and their dependents
Placement and Career Advancement

Upon completion of the Graduate Nurse Rotational Program, placements are determined by participant preference, hiring manager preference, and business need through a collaborative matching process at UPMC Shadyside. Participants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the My Nursing Career Ladder based on their individual experience and education.

Requirements

To be eligible for the Graduate Nurse Rotational Program, applicants must:

  • Be eligible for State Board Licensure and successfully pass the examination before beginning this role -OR- must have a Temporary Practice Permit and commit to taking the NCLEX examination within SIX months of hire
  • Have a BSN degree or be currently enrolled in a BSN program
  • Have completed a UPMC Student Nurse Internship Program or student clinical transitions course at UPMC
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and interact with the ages of patients
  • Understand the principles of growth and development over the lifespan
  • Assess data on patients' statuses to identify each patient's and their families' needs
  • Work productively and effectively in an environment with changing priorities that require specialized skills
  • Think critically to analyze and problem-solve to deliver the best patient care
  • Use sound clinical judgment and problem-solve to deliver quality patient care when it matters most
  • Understand, apply, and champion nursing best practices
