Farm Sanctuary is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Veterinary Care Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our animal care team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality medical care to a diverse range of species, working collaboratively with our Lead Veterinarian, veterinary technicians, and support staff.
Key Responsibilities- Medical Care Provision: Provide exceptional medical care to multiple species, including cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, alpacas, llamas, donkeys, chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese.
- Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with the Lead Veterinarian, veterinary technicians, and support staff to assess and implement standard care protocols, identify opportunities and risks, and provide informed treatment recommendations.
- Professional Development: Serve as a strategic thought partner in the development and implementation of professional development programs for wellness team members, collaborating with animal care leadership to train and support caregiving staff in performing treatments and maintaining a standard level of care.
- Risk Management: Enforce risk management strategies for animal care, including oversight of controlled substances and orders, management of prescriptions and medications onsite, and adherence to regulatory requirements.
- Research and Enrichment: Partner with the research team to advise on the design and implementation of non-invasive, sanctuary-based research studies, and serve as an advisor to the Animal Sanctuary Welfare team on enrichment initiatives.
- Representation and Support: Represent Farm Sanctuary in veterinary meetings, interact with donors and members of the public, and support the Intern Program by working with interns onsite in daily tasks.
- Active Veterinary State License: Possess an active veterinary state license in New York state.
- Doctor of Veterinary Degree: Hold a Doctor of Veterinary degree or equivalent from an accredited university.
- Commitment to Holistic Animal Welfare: Demonstrate a commitment to approaching care from a holistic animal welfare perspective and providing the highest quality of care to animal residents.
- Varied Veterinary Experience: Possess varied veterinary experience, with a strong background in conventional medicine, diagnostics, and healthcare record keeping standards.
- Species Expertise: Have experience working with a range of species, including cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, alpacas, llamas, donkeys, chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese.
- Organizational and Communication Skills: Demonstrate the ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment, while effectively communicating with the support team.
- Alignment with Farm Sanctuary's Values: Align with Farm Sanctuary's values of compassion, understanding, integrity, transformation, and freedom, and demonstrate a commitment to equity, social justice, and the principles embedded in Farm Sanctuary's mission.
- Sedentary to Heavy Work: Exert in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 35 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Prolonged Sitting: Prolonged periods of sitting in a stationary position.
- Visual Acuity: Close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, and performing medical procedures.
- Physical Activities: Bend, lift, push, stoop, stretch, climb, and crawl, and other strenuous physical activities.
- Environmental Conditions: Regularly perform job responsibilities in a variety of weather conditions, with some work performed in an outdoor setting that is not climate controlled.
