Anesthesiologist Position

Institution: VCU Health Department of Anesthesiology

Objective of the Department: The Department of Anesthesiology is dedicated to providing exceptional anesthetic and critical care services to patients. We aim to enhance research and quality improvement initiatives in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine while training future anesthesiologists through our residency and fellowship programs, as well as medical student education.

Primary Responsibilities: Deliver comprehensive care to patients as designated by the Department Chair or their representative. This encompasses pre-anesthetic assessments, intraoperative anesthetic management, postoperative evaluations, resuscitation efforts, intensive care, therapeutic and diagnostic nerve blocks, and consultations for chronic pain cases. Supervise the activities of nurse anesthetists as directed.

Key Duties:

  • Education: Engage in clinical teaching at the bedside for residents, medical students, and student nurse anesthetists. Participate in the department's educational programs and attend necessary conferences, rounds, and meetings as required.
  • Research: Engage in clinical or laboratory research and other scholarly activities independently, adhering to institutional and departmental guidelines. Participate in clinical trials based on interest and specialization.
  • Service: Contribute to various departmental, School of Medicine, university, or health system committees as requested or based on personal interest. The department emphasizes the importance of institutional citizenship and encourages community service.
  • Clinical Care: Provide anesthesiology services to patients as directed, including in main operating rooms and outpatient settings. May oversee and guide Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) as appropriate, and direct anesthesia care in critical care areas.

Qualifications Required:

  • MD or DO degree
  • ABA board eligible/certified in anesthesiology and/or certified/eligible for Critical Care Certification
  • Eligibility for unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia
  • Eligibility for employment in the United States
  • Strong communication, clinical, and teaching abilities
  • Proven experience in fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member
