Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Animal Control Officer II to join our team at the City of New Albany. As a key member of our animal control department, you will be responsible for coordinating all activities related to animal control fieldwork, supervising animal control officers, and ensuring the welfare of animals in our care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate all activities of animal control fieldwork and associated records.
  • Supervise animal control officers and dispatchers, and provide guidance and support as needed.
  • Communicate and coordinate activities between animal control and other shelter staff and volunteers.
  • Investigate citizen complaints and take appropriate action in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for the capture and impoundment of animals, and ensure their safe and humane treatment.
  • Coordinate and safeguard procedures for animal bite quarantines, head removal, and shipping for rabies testing when necessary.
  • Communicate and coordinate with law enforcement and other agencies as needed.
  • Responsible for the care and maintenance of all animal control vehicles and related equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of citations, works closely with the city attorney in prosecution of court cases.
  • Responsible for the intake and setup of animals brought into the shelter by animal control.
  • Pick up and remove dead animals as necessary.
  • Conduct investigations regarding animal control-related problems.
  • Complete required reports and keep accurate records.
  • Treat and/or euthanize animals as advised and approved by the Animal Care Manager or Director.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree in criminal justice, animal science, or a related field; or experience as an animal control officer, police officer, or in a related profession.
  • Must maintain a valid state-issued driver's license.
  • Specialized knowledge of the principles and objectives of animal control and law enforcement activities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in written form.
  • Pleasant, friendly, and outgoing demeanor.
  • Willingness to take on additional tasks as assigned.
Working Environment and Conditions

This position involves frequent daily contact with other staff, volunteers, and the general public to provide service, carry out policy, and maintain coordination within the department. The position also involves an on-call schedule for 24 hours on a rotating basis.

This position is consistently exposed to animal-related hazards while performing the duties of the position. The employee must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and make rapid analysis and decisions, communicate with the public, and take action as needed.
