Department Overview
The Gas Operations team is dedicated to ensuring the secure and dependable delivery of natural gas to our clients. This department oversees all facets of gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance, construction, restoration, and emergency response.
Position Summary
This role is represented by IBEW Local 1245, an organization with over a century of experience advocating for employees at PG&E. This position is subject to collective bargaining agreements.
The Electric Locator is a skilled professional with Journeyman Electrician qualifications, responsible for the accurate, safe, and efficient identification of underground utilities, including electric and gas lines. This role also includes standby responsibilities when contractors are excavating near critical infrastructure. Responsibilities include maintaining necessary documentation and serving as a liaison to third-party contractors, customers, and private landowners. Additionally, the Electric Locator may perform gas locating and marking duties as required alongside electric locating tasks. Standby work for non-company construction projects is primarily assigned to Gas Compliance classifications, but Electric Locators may be called upon to assist if they are DOT operator qualified. The damage prevention tasks are not exclusive to this classification, and Electric Locators must complete training and meet qualifications initially and annually thereafter.
This position is intended to fill vacancies in the Bay Area region, with opportunities available in various locations.
Important Note: This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.
According to Letter of Agreement 16-28, Electric Locators are committed to this classification for a period of 24 months.
Compensation Information
PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This position is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The starting wage rate for this position is $62.91 per hour, specific to the locality of the job. The wage rate is influenced by various factors, including specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.
Job Responsibilities
- Complete necessary documentation and act as a liaison to third-party contractors, customers, and private landowners.
- Perform standby duties when contractors are excavating near critical infrastructure.
- Conduct accurate, safe, and efficient locating and marking of underground utilities, including electric and gas.
- Engage in DOT-Operations/Maintenance and Emergency duties.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must possess a High School diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.
- Must hold and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions.
- Ability to drive safely in all weather and road conditions.
- Ability to work extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Completion of an IBEW/Joint Apprentice Training Committee (JATC) sanctioned Electrician training program.
- Must be able to wear company-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Desired Qualifications:
- Previous military experience.
- Electrician Journey certification.
- Manhole safety training.
- Experience in PG&E construction or utility work.
- Five years of journey-level experience in industrial electrical construction.
- Experience with electronic or mechanical equipment.
- Instrumentation and control experience.
- Electrical experience with substations or power generation.
- High voltage experience.
- Experience with testing equipment and troubleshooting.
- Previous experience with utility locating and marking.
