Registered Nurse RN Observation Unit

This is a fast-paced 52-bed unit for both medical and surgical patients requiring short-term care. As an extension of the ED, patients here have an anticipated discharge of about hours, allowing for treatments and procedures before discharge. Top diagnoses on Observation include Chest pain, Afib, Hypertension, PE/DVT, Abdominal pain, Trauma, TIA/CVA, CHF, Asthma/COPD, Vertigo, AFR/electrolyte abnormalities, Syncope, Hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia, and Pre/post procedure (cardiac cath, OR, pacer, ablation, etc.). This unit demands strong assessment skills and critical thinking, as patient conditions can change rapidly.
Responsibilities- Assume responsibility and accountability as defined by the American Nurses Association standards of nursing practice.
- Provide direct care to patients, considering factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice.
- Work closely with the interprofessional healthcare team to facilitate coordination of care across the continuum.
- Develop knowledge and skills necessary to provide individualized care based on physical, psychosocial, cultural, educational, safety, and age-appropriate considerations.
- Participate in process improvement activities, focusing on increasing continuity in the nurse-to-patient relationship, minimizing rework, and redundancies.
- Complete mandatory education and training, including review of age-specific needs, caring behaviors, and interpersonal skills.
- Maintain a safe working environment through compliance with established evidence-based practice policies and procedures.
- RN licensure issued by the PA Board of Nursing or a Temporary Practice Permit until an RN license is obtained.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- A graduate registered nurse may only practice professional nursing under supervision and if the graduate registered nurse holds a current temporary practice permit.
- CPR Certification - American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support, formerly Healthcare Provider (AHA Heart Saver AMA CPR/BLS certification required within 30 days of hire.
- A healthcare provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs.
