Job Overview

The Breast Imaging Specialist is responsible for executing mammography examinations as directed by the referring physician and under the supervision of the radiologist, adhering to the protocols and procedures sanctioned by Glendive Medical Center.

Supervisory Duties:

  • No supervisory responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide courteous and supportive interactions with patients, visitors, and healthcare team members, fostering effective relationships.
  • Exhibit strong time management capabilities and make informed decisions during daily operations.
  • Identify oneself, greet patients, verify physician orders, confirm patient identity, explain procedures, position patients appropriately, and conduct examinations in accordance with established protocols.
  • Demonstrate and uphold behaviors aligned with GMC's mission, vision, values, and service expectations, while fulfilling all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements. Maintain proficiency in all relevant standards pertaining to safety and job performance.
  • Utilize appropriate radiation safety measures while preparing and operating the mammography equipment.
  • Report any unusual concerns or situations regarding staff, patients, or physicians to the Imaging Manager or Medical Director.
  • Carry out various clerical and administrative tasks, including patient processing, completing necessary documentation post-examination, and ensuring proper identification of exams for PACS storage and review.
  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness and organization of examination rooms and manage inventory of essential supplies.
  • Engage in quality control and assurance initiatives.
  • Support patient transport as necessary.
  • Perform additional tasks as required.
  • Conduct mammography procedures by positioning the breast, adjusting compression settings, instructing patients on breath-holding, retreating to a protected area, adjusting equipment for exposure, capturing images, and preparing for subsequent views.
  • Ensure the quality and consistency of mammograms by adhering to established standards, developing images, reviewing results, making necessary adjustments, and forwarding completed studies to the radiologist for interpretation.
  • Maintain the functionality of mammography equipment through preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and coordinating repairs as needed.
  • Keep mammography supplies and patient drapes organized and ready for use.
  • Document patient mammogram services accurately in patient records.
  • Charge for mammography procedures and supplies according to established protocols.
  • Provide orientation and training for new technologists.
  • Address the psychological and physical needs of patients undergoing mammography.
  • Collaborate with radiologists to develop new protocols and imaging techniques.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
  • Ability to learn and conduct quality control studies, operate computerized radiologic equipment, and manage recordkeeping through computer systems.
  • Strong organizational skills for independent work.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for addressing patient concerns.
  • Capability to establish effective working relationships with patients and colleagues.

Educational Background and Experience:

  • Possession of a Montana State Radiology License prior to commencement of employment. Active registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is mandatory.
  • Mammography certification is required or must be obtained.
  • Preferred one year of prior experience as a Radiologic Technologist.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand, reach, and bend for extended periods.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Physical strength and agility to position patients for various diagnostic examinations.
  • Good vision, hearing, and communication skills are essential.
